I'm pretty sure that the season-ending cliffhanger predates TNG (or at least predates BOBW). Who Shot JR was in like 1980.

Just tell a complete story, preferably one per episode.

This part, I'm pretty sure, is a result of the move to streaming TV, because streaming TV platforms seem to believe that serialized narratives get people to keep watching and lead to higher time spent viewing.

Serialized shows are nothing new but streaming platforms particular way of handling them is. And the decrease in good monster of the week shows is def a negative.
