Nothing wrong with wanting to pretend periods don't exist. Lots of people who have them want to pretend they don't exist, not just authors. As you said, sometimes chamber pots are mentioned but not always because nobody wants to think about it. Heck, if they went into too much detail about something, someone on this very community would probably posit the idea that the writer has a fetish for periods or peeing or pooping and we'd all be asking why they had to explain it. We all know it happens and can assume it gets taken care or without the author holding our hand through it.

Hah, yes. I mean obviously there are things that people did before the invention of pads/tampons (like thick cloths they would wash and reuse), presumably without drawing any attention to it, so I just go with "they probably handle it however people handled it in that sort of setting" and unless there is a specific reason to bring it up (like a missed period alerting someone to the fact they might be pregnant maybe?) it's not anything I would draw attention to either. And of course in stuff set in the future, can always handwave it as "science!" or in fantasy as "magic!"

Occasionally I've made use of chamber pots or the mention of someone going "to relieve himself" somewhere in my stories for the sake of plausibility, and plus the latter gives a convenient and always-reasonable excuse for a character to leave the group for a second and go off by themselves into the woods alone and maybe notice something...

In the Norwegian series Beforeigners, a woman who'd come to our time from the Viking era went to the park and collected moss to use.

Huh, that's definitely not something I would've thought would work, but hey. Not like I've tried it. Or am likely to. As much as I like resourcefulness, in some matters I'm happy to just have convenience...
