(Anonymous) 2022-01-19 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)Ramin never captivated me and I felt that he overacted in the final lair sequence in the 25th-anniversary concert. Not a fan of Hadley Fraiser's Raoul on that video either. It should've been Patrick Wilson since he and Sierra got amazing chemistry in the "Guys & Dolls" concert back in 2014 at Carnegie Hall.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-20 06:43 am (UTC)(link)I may have seen O'Leary, and have seen Carpenter, Owen Jones, and Panaro.
The only things I know about Barbour are a) he's a massive creep and b) everyone was photoshopping trash cans in his place in promo photos because of a). Oh, and he's a baritone, or more of one than most (tenor) Phantom actors. I've only heard Terrance Mann as the Beast from the Disney BatB recording, but anyone that didn't get the role because they were typecast as a creepy abuser of teenage girls in dressing rooms would've been a step up. Brad Little was an awesome baritone Phantom, at least during his early days with the US tour.
I've seen Ramin live as both the Phantom and Raoul. As Raoul he was awesome, and seemingly consistently so. As the Phantom, he was really inconsistent. I only saw him twice in the role, but from reviews at the time, it wasn't just me, his performance really did vary widely.
Oh man, Hadley Frasier. Blech. It wasn't his fault, the 25th anniversary performance was very obviously directed to tie it in to LND, where Raoul is the drunken dissipated aristocrat of a million "Raul sux! Phantom x Christine 4eva" fanfics. I bet he would've done much better if he hadn't been directed to be a condescending asswipe.
If I could have Patrick Wilson switch roles and play the Phantom, he would've taken over for Gerard Butler, not Ramin. Or hell, Ramin could've taken over for Butler. They should've just had JOJ do the 25th anniversary performances. Or different actors playing the main trio for each of the three performances, or something.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-20 04:51 am (UTC)(link)Seeing it live is what got me into cosplay and costuming, but I'm still mad I didn't get to see the show the first two times I was in London.
I'd say if you get the chance to see it in New York, do--it's the only production mostly unchanged from when it opened there in 1989.
The touring productions no longer use Hal Prince's direction as a template, and suffer for it. And Cameron Mackintosh pulled a Les Mis reboot on the London production--fired all the cast, orchestra, and creative team, remodeled the theatre to make the production cheaper to run, cut the orchestra in half and replaced the musicians with recordings...

(Anonymous) 2022-01-20 04:30 am (UTC)(link)I’ve got a soft spot for Norm Lewis, though I’ve only seen him perform in grainy YouTube videos.
