AYRT I don't know if this is precisely what you mean, but the modern constantly-checking-in-on-eachothers-feelings is not my style, and I have yet to read a story that depicts that well. Both in an actually sounding like humans way, and a this makes for a good story way.

Your second description is what happens, the not talking pushing the tension one lol. They do however care deeply about each other, and it's at the centre of everything that happens afterwards, trying to protect each other from the fall out.

I like hurt/comfort and tenderness too. :)
