102) I've never seen anything from Joss Whedon but just because “the world” is sexist doesn't mean everyone has to be, none of my friends are sexist. It's a poor excuse, imho.

124) Hell yea.

135) :I Welp.

152) Haw haw don't look for “strong female characters” in harem animes wtf? It's all just fanboy wish fulfillment, though I never understood why slapstick-violent female love interests (and dweeby-ass male leads) are so popular in anime. I think it's whats stopping me from getting into anime in general, for every good show there are 5 more that are crap.

164) Mmm, it's not so much they want to look cool they just want to get hit on by other girls. Some guys do the same thing in male-dominated forums. I'm not sure what that has to do with your struggle as a transsexual, can you elaborate? Is this also true of crossdressers who sometimes pretend to be the other gender irl, but don't actually identify as the other gender? Do you consider them belittling too? Honest question since while I don't pretend to be a guy online I do crossdress...trans issues are so overlooked in our society I'm curious as to your perspective.

Why not? Fanboys can wish to be surrounded by decently written women as well, no?

Also, for every good ANYTHING there are 5 more that are crap. There's plenty of good stuff to occupy your time with.

They can wish for decently written women, but really crappy characterization tends to get a "pass" when it's wish fulfillment. It happens in female wish fulfillment stories too. (Like, idk, Twilight or something).

Cowboy Bebop is actually one of the good ones I'm talking about. Faye is wish fulfillment but still interesting and pretty cool.

I've also really liked Haibane Renmei, Paranoia Agent, Samurai Champloo and a few others, but then I'm looking through all these anime recommendation sites that are filled with fanboys giving "10" ratings to 35 copies of the same damn show with the same dweeby-anime guy and the same 7-8 hot underage looking girls with multicolored hair who smack him into doorposts but secretly love him and it can get sort of difficult...if you have any suggestions I would be glad to hear them though.

Of course.

Faye's not really wish fulfillment. Whose wishes does she fufill? Yeah, she's a sexy lady, but she's the kind of character who owns that about herself.

People always like crap. It's just the way of the world, I guess.

If you liked Champloo and Bebop, I'd highly recommend checking out Michiko to Hatchin. The main character is twice as much of a diva as Faye, though, so if sexy outfits really bother you, maybe not - then again, she kicks enough ass to make up for it and Hatchin balances her out quite nicely.

Hellsing is a good series for its characters rather than its plot, which is admittedly somewhat FUBAR. It's also a little gorey, though, but it's easily one of my favourite portrayals of vampires in fiction, as it takes the "they are crazy motherfuckers and will kill you, not have vampire balls in fancy clothes" approach.

Ouran High School Host Club is good if you're familiar with the anime tropes, since it skewers as many of them as it can with each episode while simultaneously embodying them. If harem anime annoys you, I think you'd appreciate it.

Full Metal Alchemist is miserable, but pretty good, if cop-out endings don't bother you too much.

I haven't thoroughly checked it out yet, but Last Exile always seems to get very good feedback and is also a more serious show.

Thanks I'll check out Michiko to Hatchin. I actually rather like sexy outfits so long as it's not every single female that shows up.

I've seen Ouran and FMA before, I liked FMA ok (even the tv ending, but not the movie so much). I dropped Ouran because of Honey: I'm familiar with that "oh she's really 18!" trope in anime, but even as a parody I still get queasy, haha. :I

I can see why it would appear that they just want to get hit on - I assure you this is not an attempt to make a hypothesis about their motives, because some indeed admitted their motives to me in casual conversation, or eventually outed themselves one way or another to the group. I've been in a number of different yaoi fangroups, livejournal communities, whathaveyou - and for roughly two years was extremely active on a fairly popular yaoi art gallery. The number of people who *did* do it to try and get the most attention, the most page views, was staggering.

Crossdressing is, in fact, a totally separate thing; it is its own subculture in the GLBT community. There are drag queens and drag kings, casual cross-dressers, many of these things in the community. There are many reasons people do it - and very rarely will they be for the reasons I get offended by those online who do it for the attention they'd receive as a gay male in a fandom that is honestly dominated by mostly women.

The subjects are indeed apples and oranges, to me.

As to how this relates to my struggle, I have unfortunately had the "You're just trying to get people to like your art more by pretending to be a dude" label stuck on me more than once, because this is so commonplace in the fandom. I've fought a long, hard battle to get where I am - on hormone therapy and living as my chosen gender. To be compared to them, simply because it's what happens the most among yaoi folk? It's a slap in the face, to say the least.

(The subject of gender, gender roles, and other related topics is indeed a very broad and fascinating topic that I am always open to discussing. If you have any interest in further bantering with me, let me know and we can figure out a way to arrange a non-comment conversation.)

164) I'll take your word for it then, since I've never been in any yaoi/slash scene. What you're describing sounds more like they're trying to adopt some a type of male privilege (?). There are people (male and female) out there who think women aren't funny/can't write/etc and I know that even professional female writers have hid their gender before.

In that case I can see where it is belittling since I know I've read that ftms have also been accused of adopting male privilege by a few in some feminist circles (and lesbian circles, though then it's "heterosexual male privilege"- forgetting that there are gay/bi ftms, and that transsexuals are even more shit on by society, if anything.)

Honestly this has made me curious as to what mtfs think of all the guys pretending to be female on dating sites and video games and the like.

I would be happy to talk with you further, though really I don't know enough about gender roles to say much that is interesting--I'm more of a learner at this point in my life. :)

God, THIS. Aren't apparently feminist writers supposed to set a better example or something? I'm not particularly attacking Whedon, mind you, I like his stuff by and large, though Dollhouse kind of sucks. I just think that if you see sexism in something then 'the world is sexist' is a sucky rationalisation.
