I didn't like the focus on Japanese culture in that secret either, so when I responded I was general about being disturbed by the general fetishization of that sort of thing. It happens in our culture too, and probably a lot of others if not most.

I know, it's just that it seems the "Ewwww, Japanese people are pervs!" attitude is a bit common, and people who think that seem to ignore that sort of thing if it's not Japanese. Maybe I'm just looking into this too hard, I dunno.

I don't think that was the author's intention. You have to admit though, that "You raped me, I love you now" theme is a lot more common in Japanese entertainment than most Western ones. Perhaps because rape and sex are more taboo in our Puritanically-rooted culture. From my own readings, rape and its aftermath is rarely presented accurately in any manner in fiction. But particularly so in anime and manga, where it is often used for titilation. I think that's what bothers me most.

It's not like every other culture doesn't have its own disgusting little dark sides. It's just that Japanese culture is extremely popular, so that is what people are most interested in. Nobody can claim theirs is less hypocritical or "superior."

Answering this after work is probably a terrible idea. My mind's a wreck.

I just mean, his feelings about sex (He's practically asexual, thinks people are out having too much sex and it's bad for society in general etc) reflects mine albeit for different reasons and not to that extreme in anyway. The huge difference is I know my feelings are mostly irrational and I don't expect anyone to act differently. I'm not asexual (I have urges and think about it) but I am pretty damn close and just feel a tad less okay about those feelings because he reminds me of that stuff in two different ways. (reminds me that I have those urges by being attractive to me, and reminds me that those feelings make me feel bad sometimes)

I would never rant about it, but yea, I have opinions on things that even if I just suggested that I feel that way I'd be looked at like a crazy pants. Um. Thanks for listening.
