Like... The second half of the book was totally readable, because it had enough hilarious murder mixed in with "DESIGNER SHOES, EVERYWHERE! Hey Bateman, what's the proper way to tie a tie when you're wearing a vest with six buttons? Shit, I'll just as GQ."
But the first half? Oh godddddddddd.
And don't even get me started on BEE's other novels. Fuck you, Glamorama. Fuck you.

But the first half? Oh godddddddddd.

I remember the 10 pages about what kind of beauty products he uses every day. After that, I think I blacked out for a while and woke up for a scene involving a rat, a tube, and a dead body.

Hey Bateman, what's the proper way to tie a tie when you're wearing a vest with six buttons?

Oups, I forgot about this vital piece of information. I guess I should read the book again!

And don't even get me started on BEE's other novels. Fuck you, Glamorama. Fuck you.

Heh. You're more courageous that I am. American Psycho was enough.

Don't forget the cheese and exploding boobies! How did that work, anyway? And the rat coming out from the toilet? Oh Bateman, I love your drug-induced shenanigans.
I could get behind Bateman being boring as fuck besides when he was murdering people, because that's what the character was supposed to be; boring and normal until he takes an axe to your face after talking about Huey Lewis and the news. But all of BEE's other characters doing it too? OH NO YOU DIDN'T.

I've read most of them. I think I might be masochistic, really. They're just so bad that I can't stop.

Don't forget the cheese and exploding boobies!

... I can't imagine how I forgot the exploding boobies. Maybe I've just been repressing. (I was about to write: "maybe I just read it again" but let's be honest: that's never going to happen.)

Bateman is boring all right! I just think he could have been boring in a short story instead of a 700 pages book.

Also, you're really selling BEE to me right now! :P

Re: 136

[identity profile] astrokittie.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of like him enough to read a full boring novel about him though. I was actually considering reading it again this morning. D=
I still have the Informers left to finish though. ONE BEE NOVEL AT A TIME FOR THE SAFETY OF MY SANITY.

I dare you to read more BEE stuff just for the crack. Lunar Park has a demonic furby and the bastardized return and death of Bateman. Ellis retcons a bunch of stuff that happened in his other novels and he backpedals on a bunch of public statements that he made about AP.
Oh. And the main character is Ellis himself.

Re: 136

[identity profile] nachekana.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you really make me want to NOT read it. But again, who knows. I might be in need of serious crack one day and remember your comment about furby and backpedaling and Ellis being a character.

Re: 136

[identity profile] astrokittie.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's... well, not totally, but mostly worth the mindfuck and feeling of "What the hell did I just read?! REALLY, BEE? REALLY?"

Re: 136

[identity profile] nachekana.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
What I love about this kind of terrible books is that they stay in your brain forever and you can't stop mentioning them as "this very bad book I read with this awful scene/plot/writing." At least, they make an impression.

I'm still trying to find something worse than "Justine" by the Marquis de Sade but I'm not sure that even exists. I need more BEE to try my theory.

Re: 136

[identity profile] astrokittie.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
120 nights of Sodom, maybe?
Just for a character named "Bum-Cleaver".

Gotta love de Sade. I should really read Justine sometime. What I've heard about it from friends is absolutely hilarious.

Re: 136

[identity profile] nachekana.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to admit, after reading Justine, I don't want to read anything from Sade. Ever again. 4OO pages of rape, torture and stupid arguments about why mean are superior to women and a man can kill his children if he wants to? I want it to be a one time experience.

It was quite hilarious to make comments at my sister when I was reading though: "she got kidnapped. Oups, she got raped. Hey, she escaped! Aww, she got kidnapped again. Too bad, she got raped. Again. Hey, she escaped! Oh no! She got kidnapped again!!" You got the drill?

Though I think you have to live it to understand it. Give it a try!!!

Re: 136

[identity profile] astrokittie.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And then she got hit by lightning at the end, right?

I'm seriously tempted to read it now.

Re: 136

[identity profile] nachekana.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't want to spoil you but yes she does!!! And it's so awesome because the final argument is something like "well, at least, she was virtuous (let me laugh at that) so she'll go to Heaven". Knowing that Sade was an atheist, it's like a big "IN YOUR FACE, WHOEVER READ THAT BOOK". I hate the book but I must say: the end made me laugh.

Re: 136

[identity profile] astrokittie.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, that's exactly what my friend said about it!

I seriously think it's Sade reading time now.

Re: 136

[identity profile] nachekana.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well enjoy! And I can tell you: this icon is completely appropriate when it comes to this book...

Re: 136

[identity profile] astrokittie.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Pfffffffffft!
I can imagine that I'll be making the face in my icon the entire time I'm reading it.

Re: 136

[identity profile] nachekana.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, you'll make this face! And you'll have this thought more than once. *points at icon* But all in all, you won't ever forget what you'll be reading. I'm sure I'll talk about it with my grandchildren...

Re: 136

[identity profile] astrokittie.livejournal.com 2009-03-19 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Believe me, I haven't been able to forget 120 nights of Sodom. D=

Re: 136

[identity profile] fanbeatsman.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Glamorama took an epic left turn at the traffic lights about halfway through. I enjoyed it when it was kind of like Zoolander and poking fun at Victor, but once the terrorist plot really kicked in I was sort of left thinking wtf surely there were better and more coherent ways of making whatever the fuck point you were trying to make?

Re: 136

[identity profile] astrokittie.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it finally went to hell after the threesome scene happened. My brain just kind of left and I begrudgingly finished it. Oh god, that book, my mind.
