I agree, look at the recent posts. People are complaining about the characterization? They are putting together character sheets. Other people have done it. There is a wiki for anyone to add to. If you have issues with the way people are writing, make a discussion post on it or make one in your journal and link it, as I have seen several other do.

If you don't like kid fic, don't read it, or mpreg or whatever. They are clearly labeled most of the time. I know what I don't want to read, so I don't, it's that easy. Bad fanart is fleeting, don't like it? It won't ruin your day if you spot it, just close the page.

I know what authors I like, and I know the ones I don't even look at. I don't demand they stop posting though.

The fandom is going through a dry spot because many of the really good authors are working on their Big Bang. There are bursts in quantity and quality depending, like after Secret Invasion there was a huge boom of angst, then of fluff to combat it. If you don't like the fic now, then wait or leave and come back.

If its mostly one person doing this, I hope they make their peace with the fandom and either leave for good or do something constructive, not calling people out in personal, anonymous, attacks.

Well put, thank you.

I was gonna comment about the secret, but I was going to be way more sarcastic, which probably isn't a good thing. So yeah. Thank you.

Also, I would like to point out to the OP that there's a plot bunny post in the comm. Just post some requests there (anonymously if you prefer), something may come out of it.

:)

Sarcasm can be fun, unfortunately it does not always translate well over the internet. :(

I love the plot bunny post, I can't wait for things to come out from it. I was thinking about creating a kink meme of sorts, but this is even better I think. Shame not alot of the posts are conducive to fanart though, I can't write.

LOL, you'd be surprised. A ranting comment threads about plot points in [livejournal.com profile] caprion_bigbang inspired the two page comic I'm currently drawing.

Heh, I'm often tempted to make pages of comics for fics I really love, but then life catches up and then I remember I still have a month of school left and I am way behind. Even though I don't care right now, I just want my portfolio results. >.

Very well said. I have my complaints and I think that a lot of the ones brought up are valid, but I'm doing something about it.

Start a discussion. Don't be afraid because you should know there will probably be people who will back you up. You'd be surprised how many people are willing to sit down and have a real discussion with you.

And to whoever is going around making personal attacks against members (not saying it's you, secret person):
People will take you a lot more seriously when you stop calling people names.

Thanks :)

There's nothing wrong with having issues with a fandom, nor is there anything wrong with mentioning it. But do something about it and go about it in a civilized manner, like you are.

For all the love there is in this fandom, there are circles of people who openly dislike parts of it, but hey are not making hate memes or various secrets.

Some hate Tony as a woobie, some hate the Ultimates, some hate kid fic and mpreg, some have a squick in regards to a certain disease, or to unhappy endings. Some people feel Steve is prudish, other write him as merely private. Fans stay in their own circles and comfort zones, but its also a fandom fairly open to discussion as to why they feel this way.

It can also stem from the nature of the source material. Comics are so varied and open to interpretation and personal canon, who's to say what is exactly right wrong? My Tony might be different then yours, but that doesn't mean its the only one I will read, or that its better. Hey if the author is up for it, why not discuss it? Not to say randomly launch into a critique or anything, just start a polite conversation about it and go from there if they are willing. If not let it go and maybe don't read from the author next time. I've seen it happen.

Yes exactly, that's why I thought the character sheets would be a good idea -- to give facts about the characters without any bias towards any sort of characterization, while giving people a quick reference to the massive back canon.

And to the original poster -- Feel free to PM or IM me if you want to vent. I'm sure we have some common ground somewhere XD

Once we get things out into the open, it'll be a lot easier to fix, or at least attempt to fix.

To be fair,

[identity profile] jazzypom.livejournal.com 2009-03-19 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
In canon, Tony isn't really a woobie, per se. Yes he's sensitive, but people tend to write him as overly self hating (eating disorders, what?) and finding his only joy in Steve Rogers, which is not true. So, I thought the person had a point.

Personally, stuff like Mpreg, kid fic, etc, I'll just scroll on by.

Re: To be fair,

[identity profile] stormseye.livejournal.com 2009-03-19 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The reason, I feel that people like making Tony into this extreme woobie is that he yes he has self hating issues. And they just take it and make it consume him so he's a victim, when in canon it often drives him to take extreme measures. In canon he forgets to eat because he's busy, because he forgets, whatever, so they take that and make it into an eating disorder. His moments of despair are taken to extremes, but alot of his self inflicted punishment is in the pursuit of something, rather then self inflicted pain for the sake of it. It's exaggerating canon as well as established fanon that many unfamiliar with the source material that turn him into this simpering wreck of a woobie. If canon hasn't broken him yet, you better put him through the goddamn ringer if you make him a nervous wreck that only Steve can save.

It's not hard to ignore what you don't want to read. I don't understand when it's a problem, it's not like the fandom is OMG over run and flooded with it.

Re: To be fair,

[identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I've never actually been sure what the specific definition of "woobie" is, beyond "character that is my favoritist evar whom I like to watch suffer beautifully," and the fact that everyone seems to think Rodney McKay is one for reasons which totally escape me.

I'm probably one of the people who woobifies Tony, though, if one uses "wuv him and like to watch him suffer beautifully" as a yardstick.

I fled from the eating disorders fic in open fear, because I just knew that it would a) probably be awful, given that it would take near god-like levels of talent to make that scenario work well and b) be incredibly triggering.
