This relationship would be skeevy in real life, but I don't see anything wrong with it in fiction.

For real!

Same. I hate that people self-censor in fanfic because some pearl-clutcher *might* go off about their fic.
Screw that kind of crap, write it and post it!

I'm currently writing an adult/minor ship in a relatively new fandom known for policing that sort of content. I've yet to have someone complaining about it in the comments. Aside from the ship dynamic the stuff I write is pretty niche. If they do? Who cares. That's their problem. Not mine. They saw what it said on the tin and opened it up anyway.

Yup. This.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-21 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It sucks if people get up in arms about this stuff, I'm a grown ass woman and it's still one of my favorite tropes. Getting the attention of someone way out of your league is hot and I refuse to feel bad about it lol

If you tag it properly, write whatever you want. Despite what antis say, what you imagine in fantasy does not equal what you condone IRL.

I also feel Labyrinth should get a general "sexual awakening for lots of young women because of David Bowie, of course it's gonna get weird" pass when it comes to ~problematic~ themes.
pantswarrior: Laguna scratches his head. (huh?)

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2022-01-22 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, all of this. I mean really... would people expect for Labyrinth fanfic NOT to have anything to do with a girl coming of age and being seduced and/or claiming her own autonomy in multiple ways in the company of a hot adult man? :P

Except of course for the contingent who is in it for the hot Hoggle/Didymus slash.

Right? When I first watched the movie, I wanted her to get her brother back to safety and just STAY WITH THE GOBLIN KING. Maybe not forever, but for a good while, at least....

(Anonymous) 2022-01-22 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
but it's not labyrinth fanfic it's rpf? can no one in this community read?
pantswarrior: "I am love. Find me, walk beside me..." (Default)

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2022-01-22 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I saw that part. And honestly many people would probably say that RPF is gross regardless of whether or not it involves someone underage, so *shrug* At least in this case it's directly linked to a movie with "growing up" themes so the underage part seems at least understandable rather than coming out of nowhere. (And especially if the OP came up with the scenario in their teens... very understandable.)

Thiiiiiis.

+1

Not just women either. Bowie was an all-genders phenomenon.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-22 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
As long as you tag and warn accurately, there's nothing wrong with posting it. It's a very common fantasy, and it doesn't necessarily normalize anything, because the fact that it's taboo is part of what makes it hot. Which is totally fine, that's what fantasies are all about.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-22 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
good GOD quit with the problematics and the acceptables. why are you self-flagellating?

like what you like and fucking OWN IT

The great thing about posting fanfic is that you can tag for it and also writing an author's note at the beginning to help put things into perspective that X and Y in the fic are wrong to prepare your reader's, if you feel that's necessary. I do it all the time if I feel the tags don't suffice as a warning. Most of the messed up stuff I write isn't idealized unless unreliable narration from a character counts. But usually it's pretty obvious even then. At least IMO.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-22 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
If you wouldn't let some pearl-clutching PTA parent from suburbia or red-faced bible-swinging preacher from a culty church tell you what fantasies you're allowed to have, don't let their twitter warrior kids tell you either. As long as you don't act on anything that would hurt someone else, you're good.

Seriously though. The idea that fandom can only have pure vanilla desires, fantasies, and interests unless they want to be cringy deviants just means that they're swallowing the conservative grandstanding of their parents but think that if they dress it up in social justice language it's somehow less of a moral purity crusade meant to control women/queer folk.

' but think that if they dress it up in social justice language it's somehow less of a moral purity crusade meant to control women/queer folk.'

Considering the amount of navel gazing that goes on in fandom these days, I am amazed more people don't realise this. This is why fandom came into being in the first place!

(Anonymous) 2022-01-22 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone who isn't one of aforementioned twitter warriors realizes this and talks about it constantly. The twitter warriors only navel-gaze in ways that reinforce their beliefs, and they respond to all analyses of why they're like this with "I'm not reading all that lol"

Rewrite and post them! "Problematic" fics are posted every day and are often the most interesting ones. Flip tumblr gatekeeping culture a huge fat bird.
