The only time I find this sort of okay-ish is when the focus is more on a particular character's journey through life. And not necessarily just the romance. It's reasonable you may have a few flings or sparks or dead ends along the way. I especially love it when they're distracting themselves with other people due to some serious denial. But it's very easy to just seem for the point of drama and jealousy at times and rather cheap. So, yeah, it usually isn't fun. But I can see and have seen it utilized properly.
