I don’t watch Star Vs. the Forces of Evil, but there’s a pretty good video about how it abused this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=c4NI8o1FPPI

I have watched Star Vs. and now I am curious about this video. I got no issue with the pairing between the two, but they did drag the pairing and I remember rolling my eyes at this 5th grade romance subplot. So thanks for the video link!

Temps are okay if used properly. If you are using them to show why the OTP work best together, or to show why one of them has a deficit in their character they need to fix, then that is okay. It is when the writer just needs to kill time because it isn't smooshin time already and throws a disposable in there to pad things out instead of writing proper plot that there is a problem.

I also think sometimes the writers has also gotten tired of the slow burn, and so the writing for the temps comes across fresh and new, because the writers are having more of a fun time.

If a whole show is centered around the slow burn (like say the Nanny), then I genuinely get why you wouldn't want to remove the main conflict of the show. But that doesn't make it less annoying.

The temporary love action is what it is all about. Did I ever tell you about How I Met Your Mother?

The only time I find this sort of okay-ish is when the focus is more on a particular character's journey through life. And not necessarily just the romance. It's reasonable you may have a few flings or sparks or dead ends along the way. I especially love it when they're distracting themselves with other people due to some serious denial. But it's very easy to just seem for the point of drama and jealousy at times and rather cheap. So, yeah, it usually isn't fun. But I can see and have seen it utilized properly.

I don't mind it if the story/show/whatever is long running. Bringing in more characters/love interests can keep the story from stagnating if done right.

It's a very case by case thing for me. I LOVE extremely drawn out slow burns, but so often the writers stretch out the drama in ways that end up being really off-putting. My personal opinion on the matter is that whatever drama occurs should not make me like either of the characters less, and should not make me feel like the characters might not actually be right for each other.

If you can do drama in a way that only deepens how badly I want my ship to get together, then I am here for it, 100%, but most shows aren't that deft, and instead end up going the "everyone is exhaustingly messy" route.

That's why I go for romances where there's instant chemistry and the main couple get to fucking/naughty touching and kissing early on. Shit gets in the way, even temporary love interests, but our main couple still come together again in the end. And it's nice because you already know the makeup sex is going to be hotter than the first time around.

I do like stories where there is a lot of chemistry and the couple doesn't get together in the end but the setup has be done perfectly with the right chemistry (IE. the classic Elizabeth and Darcy). And I can only deal with this setup so many times where I find it boring, so I prefer a mixup of when the main couple gets together. A lot of the fun for me is seeing the couple do couple things together, fight through couple fights, and I don't want to read a whole novel to get a slice of that and then maybe a sequel. I want a whole novel of fluff, drama, and smut!

*I meant that I like stories where the couple doesn't get together UNTIL the end too in the second paragraph

yeah, miraculous ladybug is a prime example of this.
