What's a monkey's paw moment? I know the original and Simpsons stories, but I can't figure out how to apply it to fandom.

I assume stuff like: your ship happens... but only retroactively after one half of it dies. Or the character you hated finally gets killed off the show... with no IC conclusion of anything because the actor decided to quit. Or some long ended series gets a reboot... but it's by showrunners you hate

You get something you wished for, but it's done in a way that's awful and that you hate.

A monkey's paw means that you get your wish, for your fandom, but it turns out to be the complete opposite of what you want and makes things just so much worse. An example would be Moffat leaving Doctor Who as showrunner. Or Moffat joining Doctor Who as showrunner.

Or a Live Action Transformers movie, which sounds awesome until Michael Bay is announced as the leading light behind it...

Or a Terry Pratchett live action Watch series, and... Well, we don't talk about the Live Action City Watch series. There never has been a Live Action City Watch series.

Or some new Harry Potter material, and it is wizards shitting in a corner.

Or a new Godzilla movie, and it is Godzilla 2014: Godzilla versus The Visible Light Spectrum.

Or a new Superman series which isn't Snyderized (Snyder taking over the DCU being a Monkey's Paw itself), but it turns out to be a moody unshaven scruffpot. Get. A. Shave!

All of those are examples of Monkey's Paw in fandom.

Grey’s Anatomy is pretty good at these. Wish Lexi and Mark were back together? They declare their love for each other… then Lexi dies, then Mark dies. Wish Arizona and Callie were back together? They get back together… but Callie didn’t come back, Arizona left to join her. Wish Meredith and Derek could get back to good? They do… then Derek dies. Wish Alex and Izzie had ended up together? They do… after he abandons his wife (and friends and job)… and only lets them know this in a letter. And on and on. I finally gave up on the show after last season and these kinds of things were part of the reason.
