Uh huh. This has got to be a troll secret.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm... dubious.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
Everything is a troll to you. Just STFU, for good.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Who do you think you're talking to? Lol. Do you think there's only one person on FS who's going to suspect intentional trolling? What a stupid comment.

I think you're overthinking it, OP.

C-dramas are a new, big thing for Western fandom. Genderbends are a common fandom practice. Of course there's going to be a lot of them.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
There's also very few canon female characters in these series, I've noticed, so I'm not surprised there's a lot of genderbending.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity, what previous fandoms have you been in/seen that you feel have had lots of genderbends? Or any specific characters?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Off the top of my head?

The Hobbit - (Bilbo Baggins as a Plucky Girl Going On Adventures)
MCU - I've seen some really fun Always-A-Girl Tony Stark, with either M or always-F S Rogers
Hamlet
The Count of Monte Cristo (that was a professional novel, mind)
The Musketeers...

and a few c-dramas.

Oh yes, and - this is a bit complicated because canonically for them gender is a choice so it's less of an AU than most - Good Omens tv fandom is *all over* fem-presenting Crowley and Aziraphale

AYRT

See, I was real intrigued when the hobbit movies came out and the always-a-girl Bilbo stories seemed so common on AO3! I pulled some numbers in 2017/2019, and Bilbo had a genderswap rate a little above 7% in fic, compared to a "baseline"/"normal" genderswap rate of 0.5%-0.7% (baseline calculated from pulling the same data from some "comparable" characters/fandoms). Maybe I should update and expand that some...

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, fascinating.

Yes, you should totally write that up.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Les Mis I think has a fair amount

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I said this in the comment thread where this was first posted but most of the genderbend stuff I see in my c-fandoms are ‘both are girls’ f/f written by gay women who just want to take characters they love and make them ladies for self-indulgent or horny reasons.

Also you don’t need to make them women to feminise Asian men because some of the worst shit I see in that regard is standard m/m that unironically goes way too far into the seme/use thing regardless of the characters canon personalities.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-29 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
and the genderswap stuff that isn't f/f is often to do with all the dynastic/marriage politics in the setting. If you make a sect heir into a girl, it changes a lot more stuff about the story than changing John Q Guy into a girl from a modern USian tvshow, so there's more variations and plots for people to play with.

Do you think all genderbends are feminization or?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
As a South East Asian American woman, I had no idea the feminization of Asian men is a thing.
I know in Western media, Asian men are desexualized. But this is done more in the vein of making them the dorky, socially awkward nerd or just making them as bland possible.

In terms of queerness...I'm not Chinese so I know very little about China's queer history and culture. All I can say is, China has a long, complex history when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community. Like virtually the rest of the world, a lot of China's queer history has been lost/destroyed, but the history is there and I find it so fucking frustrating that we can only ever discuss these things with a Western (and/or modern) lense.
Not to say I don't think feminization of Asian men is a thing, just that I've never heard of it nor can I really think of something like that happening before (at the top of my head). If this is a real thing, I would love to learn more about it.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Feminization of Asian men is a thing in gay culture, definitely. But I still don't think the secret poster knows what they're talking about. In most dude-heavy fandoms, people genderbend the characters for fun and/or smut. Nothing to do with the race of the characters.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
reminds me of that fanart that got AO3 banned in China.
Personally I find gender bending of visual media characters really weird. I can see book characters though.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I think it's mostly because there is no women in this canons.
I don't really understand why anyone want to get into canons that do not have women if it's something you care about, but that's on me

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
Because they like the plot, setting, and characters' personalities? You can be into something for all of that and still be like "Damn I really wish this awesome story had some women in it."

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I care about good or fun female characters but I 100% check that at the door for the BL genre as the women in them are pretty much always awful even when people claim they're 'good'(they're not guys stop lying to me). I'm after silly iddy m/m stories with danmei and I don't pretend otherwise, that's not to say I don't ever drop a story because the women are so fucking bad, but I have my expectations for them way, way down compared to other genres.

I get my dose of great ladies outside of danmei so I'm good.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-29 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
A different opinion isn't a lie. If I tell someone the female characters are good it's because I think they're good, not because I'm maliciously scheming to get someone into a BL trap with a lie about good female characters.
