(Anonymous) 2022-01-30 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)You had regional accents on British TV, but mostly like this generic well articulated English one. So you ended up with this weird conglomerate accent, with hints of differences. To the point where when I went to Uni in the 90s, most of us had it despite being from all over the South and Midlands of England.
I really should have referred to it as a BBC accent, that's the colloquial term I have heard used for it most often. (If there's an official term I don't know it.)I thought that would be confusing though, so went with 'generic British accent'. That's a total misnomer though, because there are dozens of British accents.
I can speak easily in my regional accent, but it's like my brain corrects itself to a BBC accent. It's weird.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-30 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)I have what is probably an Estuary English accent(or generic Home Counties as I used to call it) - or at least I used to (moved long ago and it has been tempered since) and Ginny and Jenny are very definitely different. I can see it being easy to mishear on a phoneline or whatnot, but they are not the same!
