The whole robes thing probably ties into Rowling's weird unexamined gender assumptions, but the Jenny-Ginny thing would work in a West Country accent. It would have to be an old fashioned West Country accent, but it could work.

When I was teaching young kids (think kindergarten) overseas I had a Ginny in one class and a Jenny in the other and BOY HOWDY would Ginny tear me a new one every time I called her Jenny.

I could not hear the difference at all, but boy there sure must have been one. (I also don't usually hear a difference between pen/pin though I know other English speakers do).


Also "dress robes" to me read like "dress uniform" in the military-- a fancier version of the usual robes/uniform for special occasions.

"Dress robe" and "dress" seem like totally different things to me? A dress robe seems like it would be a very fancy dressy robe. A robe and a dress aren't the same thing at all. IDK

'Dress' is basically the old 19th century way of describing clothing formality. Full dress/formal, half-dress/semi-formal, undress/informal. It hangs on for military terminology even today with 'dress uniforms', but anyone familiar with dress codes or period dramas would probably also be familiar. Hogwarts being as old-fashioned as it is, it makes sense for them to use it.

Given that robes are the school uniform, she probably figured/hoped that 'dress uniform' would be a reasonably immediate association regardless?

There's a subtle difference between the short 'e' sound and the short 'i' sound in Jenny versus Ginny, but it's there (and can be more prominent, depending upon accent).
