You don't have to be part of a group to enjoy something. I like medical shows too, but never stepped foot in a med school, nor do I know any doctors. I've just always been fascinated by medicine and surgical procedures (also, soap opera-esque drama) so I kind of just gravitate towards them.

I get the feeling I might enjoy medical stuff more if I hadn't had so many repeat encounters with horrible medical professionals. So uh, maybe inexperience actually is a good thing when it comes to medical drama. :P

Maybe not knowing anything about it is why you like it - you're not comparing to personal experience and not knowing how it should work means you don't see the holes!

Considering that apparently the most true-to-life medical show is Scrubs, being in the field might make you LESS likely to like them.

It's really hit or miss for me because every time I'm like "oh that breaks 102193423 ethical things" with science stuff, and then I remember that a class or even module on ethics isn't required for a lot of STEM degrees.

Seconding (Fourthing?) the people saying that you'd probably like them less if you were in the field. The most entertaining way to watch crime procedurals is with my one friend who's a forensic DNA analyst, but it's because it's funny watching her flip her shit every time they do something that would ruin the evidence and/or get them all fired in real life.

Haaaah, I'm kind of a hypochondriac so I can't take many of them.

I'll read fic with doctor AUs, though. I know the pairing characters aren't going to croak.

I do like ones with forensic medicine. As long as the patients are already on a slab, it's fine, lol.

Being outside of a group can make fiction which centers on that group actually more enjoyable. Any media with horses in it aside from very basic "it's the middle ages and people use carts" type stuff makes me wanna throw my head through the wall. Especially in writing because they can't avoid referring to certain things the characters are doing but do it all wrong. And it seems to be something no one ever thinks they need to research even if they look into everything else. A problem shows/movies don't have since it's all visual.

No, you can't in any context refer to stirrups as pedals. Please stop making characters ride double for long distances (sometimes at speed!)
