Of the great classics, Mr. Rochester and Heathcliff remain the only true Byronic heroes to me. They're both fucking terrible, just morally absent and abhorrent asses until they literally cannot ass anymore.

Yes I know that's not the definition of byronic hero. But it's the closest one to Byron himself imo.

I don't know about Byronic, no idea what that means. But those two are some of my least favorite literary characters ever and the reason I won't reread their books.

I can reread Jane Eyre because I liked the titular character herself, but everyone in Wuthering Heights was awful and I have no desire to reread it.

Byronic heroes are arrogant, intelligent, educated outcasts, who somehow balance their cynicism and self-destructive tendencies with a mysterious magnetism and attraction, particularly for heroines.

Ha, right?
They only really work (for me), when a) they are super-competent at something, like killing people or making bombs and b) have some major ptsd-trauma thing going on that sometimes knocks them flat on their ass.

DA - This character type works for me (boy does it ever) but only IF the character: 1. Is actually a vulnerable mess underneath their arrogant exterior, 2. Has had traumatic experiences that go a long way to explaining why they are the way they are, and 3. The narrative seems to actually recognize that they're not an aspirational figure and that they need to grow as a person in order to not be pathetic.

Sadly, these criteria are not often met by canon. *shrugs* Thank god for fanfic.

I can deal with Rochester because Jane is so fucking awesome, and sorta cancels him out. But Heathcliff? Both he and Cathy are so hateful characters, there's no canceling his Byronic toxicity. That's why I'm always confused when people talk of "Wuthering Heights" like it's a love story. It's not.

And why I have a soft spot for Tom Hardy's Heathcliff. He played the character as the spiteful toad he was written to be. He didn't romanticize that horrible behavior.
