Irn Bru doesn't make good lube, writer of a certain Scottish fanfic, it is phenomenal, but not that phenomenal.

I don't know whether my fandom is Irn Bru, or the fanfic, or just a fan of good sex.

Waaaay back in the day when I started writing smut, I remember there was a site by a gay dude giving tips on how to make m/m sex realistic or at least plausible, and he listed off a bunch of bizarro things that he'd seen used as lube in fanfic and which of them were really, really not a good idea, but most of them made some sort of sense...

I can't imagine why THIS would even come up as a possibility. But oooookay!

He died several years ago actually. I believe he had a heart condition complicated by HIV. But he died back when the site was still in its heyday. That's why it eventually vanished because he had no one else to maintain it after a while.

Oh no! I hadn't heard. So long ago I guess there wasn't so much constant social media presence to know what was going on with people...

But man. It's been 20 years and I still think of some of the stuff on that site. My first m/m ship was the OTP I'm still writing, and it's in JRPG-land and at the time the height rule was a big thing in Japanese fandoms. But I remember he wrote something about how "the toppiest top I ever met" was a short femme guy with painted nails, and well. If I did a modern AU (and the character in question had real hands), that's one half of the ship, and he dominates the crap out of everyone through the course of the game. Reassured me a lot that I was not wrong, in spite of fangirl rules. I still really appreciate that, and am sorry to hear of his loss, he seemed like a really chill, patient, helpful guy.
