hope you get better soon!

i liked encanto, i think it's good and i know it's a kid's movie so naturally the main character gets burdened way more than she should.

anyway i hatehatehate the narrative of a child having been sent to "save" the family from dysfunction when there were 4 wholeass adults (2 of which had not grown up under abuela) who could have at least tried to do something.

But... Pepa and Julieta both stand up to her at points? As does Agustin? Like I think people miss that the dysfunction is more people feeling they have to pay back and earn the miracle while not communicating their needs--that they're overburdened, that they feel left out, etc. It's like... Julieta seems pretty well adjusted. The exertion of control seems to largely be over those whose powers would have required fine control (like emotional weather, super strength, growing flowers), but those that don't cause a lot of external harm don't seem to have Abuela being as controlling (Dolores, Camilo, Julieta).

Like, the whole. "You have a cloud" "I know, Mama, I can't find Antonio now what do you want from me!?" is very much talking back. "You're too hard on Mirabel, this is a hard day for her" are very clear things talking back. "I was protecting my daughter" is talking back.

People have the dysfunction wrong because they're projecting their own family things onto Abuela. Abuela did some shit things, but it feels like it was more gradual and a lot more... Subtle than "she literally made them do things" and more "she taught them they had to pay back the miracles given to them." Which is unhealthy but, you know, I have survivor's guilt, it sucks. You do think that. That you have to earn your life and that perceived debt.
