Re: Secrets you don't want to make... (now with added COVID!)

I don’t get why some people hate Sarah Z’s fandom videos because they think she’s some outsider to fandom just making fun of fannish people having fun. She admits in basically every one of these videos that she was part of these fandoms at some point, and still has affection for them as well as some self-cringe. So why do people act like she needs to “stay in her lane” if she’s technically part of that lane?

It’s fine and understandable for people to hate her fandom videos because they don’t think she does sufficient research, isn’t great at being objective, or just don’t like them. I still think her Proshipper vs. anti video especially was overall terrible, so I understand just not liking some of her videos. And it’s especially valid to not like these videos because she’s using her big platform to put a spotlight on people that could and probably does lead to them being harassed by some of her fanbase, which is super irresponsible.

But the almost gatekeeping vibe of treating her like a “normie” is what I don’t get.

I understand if this is too wordy to make a secret out of, so don’t worry about making it if it is! I didn’t know it would be this bad, I’m so sorry!

And get well soon Secret Maker!!

She just has that normie look, you know? Moderately stylish clothes, a hair color that you can find in nature, no piercings or tattoos...

I don't think Sarah is a "normie." I think she's someone in fandom who is presenting niche fandom subculture stuff to people often way outside those niches and trying to make herself friendly and sanitized to those people. There's a vibe of throwing people under the bus who most of the time aren't up to anything that's a big deal or just engaging in a harmless hobby, that yes some people may think is cringe but isn't harmful and they're just trying to enjoy themselves and whatever. Whenever I've seen her talking about certain things in regard to her own involvement in fandom it's usually in the past tense. I used to do this as a cringe teenager but not anymore now get a kick out of these losers!

In regards to her famous pro-ship vs. anti-ship video I think she wasn't as objective as she could've been. And it probably would've been better to not made it at all. Pro-ship/anti-ship is better left in the dust. It's the kind of thing which is just fed if you feed into it regardless on your feelings.

She gets a lot of stuff really wrong so it seems like she read three fics on wattpad, retweeted a meme and considers herself an expert. It rubs the wrong way. When I hear people talking about things I don't understand I appreciate simplification and don't know how much more they know than me, but when I've been up to my eyeballs in something for 20 years I can't stand faux experts.
