152. I always have trouble with the film for that exact reason. I'm working on my history degree and have been to Egypt, learnt the history, and throughly enjoyed seeing Ramses name carved on EVERYTHING even if he didn't build it.

But at the same time, oh how I love the animation D: It keeps me coming back to watch it, despite being a history nerd/Atheist.

[identity profile] tayles.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I did my dissertation on Ramses II (specifically, him and his presentation of himself as a god, because his ego is what makes me LOVE him - especially his stealing all of Amenhotep III's shit XDD). I worked out several theories clearing Ramses' (and Seti's) names from the Exodus (and consequently dumping all the blame on Akhenaten and Tut, because we all know that family line was ker-azy).

I can admit the film is beautifully animated, but I can't watch it without seething. And I am so heartily glad someone agrees with me on the awesome that is Ramses!

[identity profile] unavalible.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ramses is so awesome that I have his cartouche on a ring on my finger right now ^_^ He was unapolagetic about his massive ego, so you have to give him credit for that. Not to mention he lived until his late 90's and fathered a bajillion children. I mean, they're still excavating KV5! Although a lot of that is because it has so much sediment in it O_o

I also have to admit that I love Akhenaten, only because he too made a mark for himself in such a radical way. As soon as you see a statue of him, you know IMMEDIATLY who it is. You can't help but be intruiged by his representations of himself and him claiming the credit according to a number of scholars for being the first follower of a Monotheistic religion. I visited a small museum in Luxor when I was in Egypt in November, and they had some of the most beautiful Egyptian statues I have ever seen in my life, and one was a large stone statue of Akhenaten that completely captivated me.

But then you go into Tut's little tomb, see his little body and wonder what exactly happened to THAT genetic line.

[identity profile] tayles.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That genetic line apparantly ended in two miscarriages. Gotta wonder if that's something to do with the age of the parents in question... or the health of line. I would love to know if Akhenaten's weirdass art style was chosen for an abstract reason or because he was actually disfigured in any way (though, when doing legitimate research for an essay my friends and I stumbled across a site posing the suggestion that Ahkenaten was an alien. I have to say it was a tempting idea... XDD)

I'm pretty sure he can claim the credit for the first recognised monotheistic religion, which is one of the reasons I can see him being linked to the time before the Exodus. Perhaps it was Tut or Aye, or even Horemheb, that drove out the Hebrews/followers of the new monotheism to complete the purge of all things Akhenaten? It's an interesting thought.

I have no words for how much Ramses's awesome holds my respect. Abu Simbel nearly had me in tears (and hey, at least he actually built that one himself, whoo!). KV5 had me freaking out with glee, and all I could see of it was the entrance :/ Though I think the theory that all the 'sons' of Ramses weren't necessarily blood-kin and instead an elite army is quite an interesting one...

[identity profile] unavalible.livejournal.com 2009-03-20 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
HA! I work in a book store, and in the 'Controversial Knowledge' section there is a book about aliens, and on the cover we have Mr. Akhenaten himself! xD I'm on the fence when it comes to his odd physical apperance, but I am leaning closer to the fact that he viewed himself as both the mother and the father of his new religion. That would explain the wide-motherhood like hips and slight swell of the chest for breasts, while still managing to keep male characteristics because we all know how the Egyptians loooved their male rulers *cough*Hatshepsut*cough*

It was interesting when I was in Egypt seeing my Tour Guide try and defend Ramses II and Ancient Egypt in the eyes of the Exodus, when he himself was Coptic Christian. I mean, is there even any proof that the Egyptians kept Hebrew slaves?

And I loved the engineering of Abu Simbel, both on the side of the Ancient Egyptians (The sun only hitting Ramses II statue on his birthday and name day! =O ) as well as the later engineering marvel of MOVING the entire side up and over to protect it from the increasing water levels!

And I see you attended the University of Liverpool! =D After I get my degree in History here in good ol' Canada, I was thinking of attending the University of Liverpool to gain my Masters in Classical Greek studies. Did you enjoy the Univeristy? (if you don't mind me asking)

[identity profile] tayles.livejournal.com 2009-03-21 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think it may be a combination of things - he may have had a somewhat feminine appearance to start with and just made it work to his advantage in terms of ideology. Then again, I guess we'll never know, since I'd put money on his body having been destroyed during the purge of all things Aten :(

One of my lecturers did a study of slavery in Egypt - and came up empty-handed bar one image that might, maybe, have been someone selling people as slaves. It's a confused harbour scene though, so very inconclusive. The closest thing to slaves we have is indentured prisoners of war. The pyramids certainly weren't built by slaves, and if anything it's likely that the Hebrews were seen as skilled brickmakers - which would maybe have had them recruited to build the cities of Akhetaten and Pi-Ramses, both cities that their kings wanted built quickly and efficiently and favoured brick over stone. I can't see Egyptians persecuting people over religion - not when they were so quick to accept other foreign gods into their pantheon to soothe the people of Nubia, or other nations they'd conquered.

Abu Simbel is just breathtaking. It amazes me that the Egyptians were able to build it to the specifications of the sunrise hitting the sanctuary on set days... and when modern man moved and rebuilt it they couldn't - it's off by one day, if I remember correctly. Kom Ombo was the same - one of the roof plinths has fallen from the temple and modern man cannot fix it, the machinery can't get up there to do it. But somehow the Ancient Egyptians managed it. It's mind-boggling.

Liverpool was awesome! I did Egyptology there, so can't really speak for the Classics side of things, though I hear nothing but good stuff from my friends on the course. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, so have no complaints about the uni or the city. My lecturers were (bar one) all fantastic, the libraries have some amazing books on antiquity, and the grounds are some of the nicest in the country. You'd enjoy it!

[identity profile] unavalible.livejournal.com 2009-03-21 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, did you not hear about the possibility that they may have found his body?! I don't know if you recall, but there was a sarcophagus in the main room dedicated to Akhenaten at the Cairo musuem covered in gold with the face of the sarcophagus smashed in. I think they may have thought it to be Smenkare's, but they finally took it on for scanning, and it appears that the mummy inside is of older and of male stature. Now we can't say for SURE that it's Akhenaten, but it's gotten people rather excited! Or if had when I read it in a new book 'The Royal Mummies: Immortality in Ancient Egypt' I got for my mother for Christmas =D

And thats very intersting! Everytime I speak with my mother about it, she gets all upset and never has a clear argument against slavery in Egypt, mostly because she's so worked up over it! xD She hates it when people get their history wrong, and slavery at the time is a big thing for her I guess.

Was it easy to find a job after recieving your degree in Egyptology? It seems like a limited career pool, which is what I am worried about when I get my degree in Classical Studies.

[identity profile] tayles.livejournal.com 2009-03-23 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, no I missed that. I confess I didn't pay much attention in the Akhenaten/Tut section of the Cairo museum cos the tour guide was royalling pissing me off. Telling everyone Tut was definitely murdered by Ay, and just generally over-sensationalising everything. Rawr. Annoying man.

Heh, I haven't exactly used my Egyptology degree - I went straight into teaching English as a foreign language (though I did the course in Egypt!) and then went off to Japan to teach. I never intended to work in the field - I just found it interesting. Having said that, if I'm in the UK much longer before going back to Japan I'm probably going to start looking at museum work.

[identity profile] unavalible.livejournal.com 2009-03-23 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be incredibly annoying, I must admit. I was lucky that my tourguide was well informed about everything and actually CARED about the truth. Even if it meant questioning his own relgion.

Haha, I plan on teaching in Japan/Korea after I get my degree in History in Canada. Just take a year off between degrees to go somewhere new and do something different, you know? =D But museum work as well as writing is what I would LOVE to do, but it's a competitive field, well at least getting into a museum is. I might volunteer at the shoddy little museum I have in my home city for a while, just to appear in the radar system.

Also, do you mind if I add you as a friend? =)

[identity profile] tayles.livejournal.com 2009-03-23 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The tour guide we had on the cruise Luxor to Aswan (Big Daddy, as we all ended up calling him) was AWESOME. I loved him. Sure, he simplified facts for the crowd, but he always came and talked translations with me too. Should have seen us reading all the coptic grafitti in some of the VoK tombs XD The tour guide we had in Cairo was a jerk. Who got Ammut's name wrong. And corrected me. *RAGE*

Good idea - any museum experience goes a long way in that field.

You certainly can, though I fear you'll find my rambling boring. Consider yourself likewise added!
