(Anonymous) 2022-02-04 01:20 am (UTC)(link)From other places, speaking in English: German, Swedish, and (at the risk of sounding ignorant) quite a few Asian and African accents. Shame that so many regional accents and dialects are disappearing around the world because English media gets shown with subtitles instead of being dubbed in people's native languages.
Auf Deutsch bin ich in Hessisch und Schwäbisch verliebt. Bayrisch/Österreichisch bekommt ja 'ne ehrenhafte Erwähnung. ;)

(Anonymous) 2022-02-04 05:47 am (UTC)(link)I'm from southern California so I hear my accent in most every show and movie that has American actors in it, because Hollywood.
Re: Favorite accents
(Anonymous) 2022-02-04 01:29 am (UTC)(link)Kiwi accents are cute (I'm not familiar enough with north/south/any other differentiation that may make it sound different -- I like them all!)
Australian accents are...it depends on my mood lol but they're alright ;)
It's never the accent as much as it's the voice and the person speaking! Re: anyone else speaking English and they may have an accent. Also, as a person who speaks more than just English, I totally feel for people who may have accents in this language, especially when it's difficult to communicate without feeling like you sound like a fool/your actual and cultural vocabulary isn't comprehensive enough in the new language to accurately convey what you're tryinnf to say (aka I promise I'm more eloquent and not an idiot in my own language!)
Re: Favorite accents
(Anonymous) 2022-02-04 01:29 am (UTC)(link)Love the way they speak English: South Asian*, Filipino*, Scottish, New York, New Jersey (I'm a big fan of The Sopranos), Thai*, AAVA (West coast is what I'm most familiar with), all of the Southern accents (every single one)
* I'm from a ESL household and as a kid I worked really hard to have a "typical American accent", wanting to assimilate into being a "model minority" in my very mostly white neighborhood/schools I grew up in. I wanted to major in English, and I went out of my way to correct people's grammar. But as an adult, as I've come to learn that language is complex, and English is a fucking mess of a language too. I also have come to embrace my culture and that includes people who don't speak English "perfectly/well/without an accent". Also, we use accents/dialect to perpetuate a classist and racist mindset that certain accents are the "right"/"proper" way to speak, so I LOVE dialects that don't follow the typical rules of sentence structures. I also love some ESL accents because they speak English way more beautifully than typical English speakers do (British, US). Like, South Asian accents, I'm not good at linguistics so I'm sorry if I'm explaining this wrong, some of them use the fullness of their mouths and tongue to annunciate words and I think it sounds beautiful. But uptight, rigid ass English says it's not proper English. I suppose that's the appeal to some Southern accents as well as French.
TL;DR I'm really high right now so IDK if this makes any sense

some spanish speaking accents give me the asmr tingles though and i'm not quite sure what it is about the cadence or anything that does it but someone speaking in a calm voice with a spanish accent just does it lol

(Anonymous) 2022-02-04 07:37 am (UTC)(link)I have to admit that I find Russian accents very sexy. I also love German accents. And French accents.
Re: Favorite accents
(Anonymous) 2022-02-04 03:16 am (UTC)(link)My own west-coast Canadian accent is nothing great, IMO. Also, I have more of a drawl than I'm aware of. Whenever I hear my own voice in a recording I'm like, Ahh, what the fuck, why am I leaning on my R's like that?!
Re: Favorite accents
(Anonymous) 2022-02-04 06:42 am (UTC)(link)(on the other hand I wish western media stopped doing faux-accents for people who are supposed to be speaking in their own language in character. But judging backlash over HBO's Chernobyl I am not going to see it anytime soon)
Re: Favorite accents
(Anonymous) 2022-02-04 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)FUCKING THIS. I'm ESL and I find this actually offensive most of the time. Make the character either speak in "standard" English or their native language with subtitles. Sometimes those faux-accents are very difficult to understand and add nothing to the atmospere of the setting. If the character is speaking English it's OK, because the character will have an accent when going for a foreign language (or if it's an old English accent), but if the setting is outside English countries and the people are speaking their own languages just DON'T DO FAUX ACCENTS. It's distracting and don't add anything at all!!!
If you want faux accents, you should get actors from those foreign languages AT LEAST. But I'd hate it too if the setting were their country of origin and they'd be speaking their native language among themselves.
IDK about the backlash on HBO Chernobyl so can't comment on it.
