If the people who do this simply shipped what they did in their own corners without being bizarrely obnoxious, and even proud about shipping a gay character as het, about it I wouldn’t care. But they never do, they always feel the need to remind everyone how ~brave they are for making a gay character straight. Truly, the champions we need in the world.

BS. I've seen people on AO3 get death threats for shipping Alec and Claire from Shadowhunters (sp) despite them having no other significant presence. Including one person who shipped Alec with multiple people, including men.

NAYRT

I don't think anyone here is defending death threats.

This. The people the original anon was talking about who act obnoxiously while shipping gay characters in het ships and the people who send death threats to those who ship gay characters in het ships while not acting obnoxious about it are both awful. AYRT isn’t actually disputing anything original anon said by talking about a completely different type of asshole. If original anon is trying to say everyone who ships gay characters in het ships all act in the same annoying or toxic way, then that’s wrong, but that still doesn’t mean they were saying anyone deserves death threats.

I was wondering where the hell are there people are doing that shipping and I completely forgot about this series.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-05 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
That's because there are people in fandom (in general as well) who are simply mentally ill. Sane people don't make death threats.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-05 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think that depends heavily on what fandom you are in, and what spaces you hang out in.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-05 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely every person who behaves this way is a troll who doesn't engage in fandom in any other way, and can be ignored. The fans who just like the ship tend to double down on defending the fact that they ship it as an AU because they like the chemistry and that they don't deny that character is gay in canon.

please google survivorship bias

literally lots of people simply ship what they want in their own corners of fandom, but if you personally aren't one of the people dogpiling them for the sin ""straightwashing"" then OBVIOUSLY the only ones YOU hear about are going to be the obnoxious proactively defensive ones

(Anonymous) 2022-02-05 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, lots of people are still very, very happy to dogpile others for the sin of making/seeing their faves gay, as well.

Ah, the "You disagree with me, therefore you are -ist/-phobic." Which logical fallacy number was that, again?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-05 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
Were they really calling anon anything-ist/phobic, or just pointing out that people still get attacked for writing straight characters as being in gay relationships just as much as people get attacked for writing gay characters as being in het relationships?

oh no the hetrophobia of the situation :(

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2022-02-07 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
I’m not saying one is the same as the other, no matter if both groups are ostensibly being attacked in similar ways. It’s obviously way shittier for people to be homophobic towards people writing characters in gay relationships. So I’m not meaning to imply that “heterophobia” is happening, or that people getting harassed for writing gay characters in straight relationships is in any way comparable to the real world effects of homophobia.

But also, this comment has nothing to do with how this thread has been going. The anon I was replying to thought the anon before them was calling them homophobic(or -ist/phobic in general) for saying that plenty of people still get homophobia for writing characters in non-canon gay relationships. I responded that I didn’t think they were calling them homophobic, just saying that characters writing gay characters in straight relationships by no means have the monopoly on being harassed. So again, in no way was I implying “heterophobia”, or that people writing gay characters in straight relationships have it worse, or even just as bad. I was basically saying the opposite to someone who thought they were being called homophobic when I don’t think they were. So I think your “oh no the hetrophobia of the situation :(“ would work better as a response to the anon above me.
