Musicals You Would Like to See as a Movie Musical?

Jerry Springer the Opera could make a great movie, if they preserved some of the “stage”-ness of the show. Even better if they could convince Jerry himself to make a cameo appearance.

I don't want more Movie Musicals, I want more recorded Stage Musicals.

Yesssssss not every musical translates as well to being a movie, some of them belong on the stage, but they should still be made more widely available.

People who can attend live theatre are always going to do so when possible, making stage musicals available to stream isn't going to lead to some kind of 'death of live theatre'-- but it might lead to future theatre people.

Yes! Several years ago, MTV(?) showed the Broadway production of Legally Blonde, and that's the closest I've ever gotten to Broadway. (I haven't caught up with Hamilton yet.)

Yes to the LOTR musical. Hadestown could make a fun movie. The lion king musical, but with people in costumes like the stage musical rather than animated lions. Little Shop of Horrors the musical. Aida (I just love the music), and Matilda because the musical is miles better than the movie adaption of the book and I would love to have a movie I actually enjoy.

But Little Shop already ... has a movie musical? From like, 1985 with Rick Moranis as Seymour and Steve Martin as the Dentist? Or are you wanting a new adaptation of the stage musical on screen/one with the original ending?

I was just thinking the same thing about the Little Shop of Horrors movie musical. It’s fine if they want another one, but the 80s one does already exist, and it’s pretty good and faithful to the musical. They even filmed the darker original ending, even though they went with the happy ending for the final cut. But you can still find it on the DVD I think, or at least YouTube.

...I was also thinking “how can phil not like the Matilda movie??”, but that was a stupid thought because it’s a valid opinion not to like a movie.

I'd like a new adaption of the stage musical, and I'd also love one that kept the original depressing ending that is far superior.

Disagree on the original ending being superior.

A new adaptation is already in the works.

I also agree that the original ending is far superior to the one that made it to the theatres.

Starlight Express. There's only maybe a 10% chance that it would be actually good, but there is about an 85% chance that it would be a glorious disaster. A beautiful train wreck, if you will.

I saw someone write that the only way it could work would be if the characters were like Transformers and would transform for the races. Which I would agree with.

Also animated versions - like when the original idea for the Cats movie was going to be an animation (which I would still want to see tbh). Also Wicked and The Wiz.
