I want to buy something from Japan, but the site doesn't ship internationally, so I'd have to use a proxy. I got a couple of quotes to see how much it would cost and the total would be triple what the item costs, so I won't be getting it and I'm feeling kinda bummed about it.

I feel you. International shipping costs have gone insane as the pandemic's gone on.

you;re not wrong to feel that way, anon. the levels of "whose money do you want to accept and where do you want to ship?" are confusing at best, offputting at most.

I had saved for 5 years to get a cosplay item only available in Japan only to be told I needed both a Japanese ship-to address AND and a Japanese monetary account to purchase. I passed, since at best I could get a proxy for shipping but not for payment. A year later, a Chinese vendor of the same Japanese goods surfaced. I have qualms about sedning money to China but since the vendor and recepient were still Japanese, I went for it. Worth it, top notch product and swift shipment even in a pandemic. Goes to show, there's ways around any of your personal boycotts and hesitations.
