(Anonymous) 2022-02-09 08:11 am (UTC)(link)The people who didn’t immediately get angry and start yelling at OP for bragging aren’t the ones who are embarrassing themselves. It’s fine for the people being snarky to OP, even if I don’t agree with them, because they’re at least being calm. But some people clearly hate anyone being too overconfident for their taste, and really want to try to rectify that.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-09 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)I'm not saying that was their intent. Honestly, it was the emphasis on actively that made me stop a bit. Going over it again, the secret seems to imply that 1) if you just strive to improve your skill, you are guaranteed to end up confident and produce good work (as if only confident people produce good work, and that confident people ONLY produce good work) 2) if you are insecure, you haven't bothered to improve your skill and/or you produce poor quality work, and 3) if you produce good work, you should not be insecure. And maybe it's all well-meaning, but it isn't exactly helpful to anyone struggling to view their work objectively, regardless of their skill level. (Not that OP is obligated to provide any kind of help, of course.)
I don't think OP is ableist - maybe they honestly have no idea, but if they're suggesting a one-size-fits-all solution to a problem while ignoring the mental disabilities/struggles of others when it comes to that problem (again, I don't know if that was their intent), then I can see why some might get offended by that.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-10 06:46 am (UTC)(link)So it’s one thing for people to react negatively to the secret because they think OP is arrogant and bragging. But to infer that OP is being ableist and telling anyone “just do what I do and you’ll be less anxious and more confident”? I don’t see where anyone is extrapolating that from at all, and I’ve reread the secret multiple times to try to see. I think it’s a big reach for people to say OP is even trying to give advice, much less imply confidence building and positive mental health space is a one size fits all. OP is really only talking about themselves, and explaining why they personally, and only they, feel as good about their work as they do. People are free to not like that, of course. But the leaps I’ve seen some people take to make this secret something it’s not, to try to find something to be offended over, is a bit absurd.
I’m not talking about you though. Your comment was very well thought out and respectful. I might not agree with all of it, but I appreciate you stating your thoughts on the matter in the manner you did.
