And he looks old enough to be her grandpa.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-09 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
At least that is period appropriate. Big age gap romances were a thing in the Victorian-Edwardian era, because history is an unending tub of grossness.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-09 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Or because we are getting more narrow-minded and puritanical the more we pretend we aren't. And for "we" read "you". Two consenting adults is not "gross" unless you're mentally and emotionally twelve.

It depends on the dynamic presented in the source and in this case...

Yeah. This. Shaw was right.

Yes! Although I'm inclined to say that the age gap is the least of the problem....

Not one of your best trolling efforts. 3/10

(Anonymous) 2022-02-09 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
3/10 for the effort but 5/10 for the correct buzzwords utilised.

you really gotta start doing this about an era in which most women could at least vote, and there wasn't a truly ridiculous class division, anon.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-10 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
wow that rock u live under must be really great for u to have spent so much time isolated under there as to be completely unaware of the concept of power differentials and social inequalities

(Anonymous) 2022-02-10 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
You're right.

But men marrying much younger women was a lot shittier in a time when women had so little agency as it was.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-10 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Sis, get off that fossil dick and stop wasting your youth on ugly old men. Also, if you're in your 30's-50's and you don't feel like a weirdo for dating a 20 year old, something went wrong in your development.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-10 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
"baaaaawwwww things are too puritanical now, why can't I date 15 year old girls anymore????"

(Anonymous) 2022-02-10 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
The replies to this are such an eye-opener. I had so idea there were so many antis and little kids afraid of aging past 20 here. Including the one who began this subthread, because you'd have to be that kind of person to think he looks old enough to be her grandpa. They look more or less the same age.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-10 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
None of them are antis, you and the anon that accused the one they were replying to of being puritanical are just belligerently obtuse and too quick to jump to conclusions. The replies are absolutely right that the dynamic from Victorian times was frequently gross because of the balance of power being skewed against women so much that they were barely even allowed to have any agency or free will. And adding in age gaps just exacerbates the power dynamic gap. Because the man in these cases has much more experience in life than the woman at due to age differences. It’s not because it’s ~pedophilia~ or something an actual anti would say, which is clearly a buzzword you wanted to use without understanding what being an anti would actually entail in this case. Just like the anon who decided to throw out ~puritanical~ as a buzzword they thought would make them sound like they knew what they were talking about, in lieu of a real argument or defense of their POV that didn’t sound tired or boring.

Did the anon who said works in the Victorian time period were a “tub of grossness” due to the age gap alone exaggerate, and miss the power unbalance being the bigger issue? Yes. Were they and the people in the replies antis who are completely wrong? No. Do you really think meadowphoenix of all people is an anti? Do you even go here? Or did you stop reading after you realized nobody seemed to agree with you, even though you’re convinced you’re right, and decided that must mean everyone that disagrees is an anti. If every reply is such an “eye-opener”, why did you not seem to use those eyes to actually read them?

And “little kids afraid of aging past 20”? You immediately resorting to cheap insults speaks volumes about how you have no real argument. Most people in this comm, if not everyone at this point, is over 20 by a bit. You could stand to act your age too, if you yourself are over 20.

And “Including the one who began this subthread, because you'd have to be that kind of person to think he looks old enough to be her grandpa. They look more or less the same age.”? No they don’t. They objectively do not look the same age. Maybe saying he looks old enough to be her grandpa is an exaggeration, but not much of one. Her definitely looks old enough to be her father. You can’t be serious to say they look the same age, unless you see wrinkles or laugh lines on Audrey in the film. In which case, get your eyes checked. This part of your comment is just as disingenuous as the rest.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-10 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Being mad that many people don't agree with you doesn't make them antis. I know this can be a difficult concept to grasp.

+ 100

The actors are 21 years apart, but since it's based on Shaw's Pygmalion play, which is based on the myth, it makes sense to me.
