In all fairness, the characters were originally conceived by two cis white dudes, the actors who play them are two cis white dudes, the script doesn't particularly lean into them being anything other than two cis white dudes, the showrunning staff is bigger and more diverse but presumably still has its share of cis white dudes...I don't think we can put this one on fandom.

Writing them as cis white dudes in itself, no. But writing them as cis white dudes while simultaneously claiming they're actually writing super-inclusive non-binary characters? I think that's a fair criticism.

And since the A/C shipper fandom isn't generally made up of cis white dudes, "the entire creative team are cis white dudes" argument really only holds water for canon, not fandom.

So yeah, absolutely pinning the performative fandom BS on fandom.

Also in fairness, David Tennant, at least, has messed around with gender presentation in other roles - Richard II, Benedick from Much Ado About Nothing, Davina from... wherever that was from.

(Given that Crowley's costuming isn't specified in the shooting script, I think he's the one who pushed for the choices they made.)

So... whatever your value of 'cis' is, he's certainly willing to play with that boundary.

Davina from Rab C Nesbitt.

Disturbingly hot, btw. I have questions about my sexuality after seeing that.
