That's sort of exactly the problem. We are meant to be uncomfortable, and it is meant to be an evil action, the first step that begins cementing Anakin as a Sith. It's clearly meant to be a Dark Side action. The issue is with the execution, both before (showing us a glimpse of what was done to Shmi) and after (Padme being pretty much fine with it), because ... I mean most people would probably flip out finding their mother like that? And a lot of people probably would, if not excuse it, at least find the reaction understandable. And because the Tuskens hadn't been portrayed as actual people very much, the audience is kind of forgiven for writing them off as evil themselves and deserving of what happened. So we're meant to see it as evil, given it's place in Anakin's arc towards the Dark Side, but the execution dilutes that a bit, because while they say he murdered women and children there, we don't see it and we don't see the Tuskens enough for it to affect us like Order 66 and the Jedi younglings later.

So in that sense, The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett going back later and showing the Tuskens more completely probably would finally bring the full horror that had been intended originally home.

Hi, OP of the text secret here and you’ve expanded on what I was feeling and more! When I wrote the text secret it was legit a knee-jerk thing because I felt like I was genuinely seeing people on Twitter essentially saying “wow, this episode made me feel weird because it makes AotC even harsher with hindsight” and it felt like they were saying they didn’t think anything of Anakin confessing to killing women and children too other than “whatever” and yes, I’d be mad if it were my mum too but I kinda felt like it was weird to not consider the Tuskens have their own whole culture and innocents with inner lives when attention was specifically drawn toward the women and the children being slaughtered along with the dudes who presumably thought nothing of starving/beating Shumi to death.

Having said all that I know the Tuskens generally weren’t fleshed out much before so I accept that we’re up against that.

Also thank you secret maker as well!

I agree with most of this, except I think that the dilution was intentional. The audience is supposed to have the option of handwaving it away, because GL thought he was being coy and giving the audience a peek of the slippery slope that led to Anakin's fall.
