What did he do?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-13 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
AFAIK the criticisms people have of RTD are that Barrowman exposed himself to people and RTD didn't stop it, and that there was a director on one of the 9th doctor episodes who was abusive and RTD didn't stop it. Haven't heard anything about any of the shows he's done since Doctor Who.

I see, thanks. Is it enough for scorn or just some incompetence? I'm not sure how directing works so idk.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-13 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
And the shit directed at lower ranked people on set was why Christopher Eccleston quit.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-13 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
My recollection of the situation is that the actual bad behavior towards lower ranked people on set came from a director of an episode, not from RTD, but I could be misremembering.

Eccles is notoriously prickly to work with himself. Hardly an unbiased source.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-14 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of them are bitter about RTD because he was unrepentant towards angry fans when he killed their woobie Ianto.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-14 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I mean he'd run out of other people to kill at that point, because we all know ~*~Gwen~*~ wasn't going to die lol.

I've noticed this too. Blizzard is only getting shit for the workplace harassment lawsuit, because people are dissatisfied with their last few games. Meanwhile, everybody forgot about Riot's workplace harassment lawsuit when Arcane came out and was critically acclaimed.

Valid criticism of Joss Whedon.

Weird Whedon Nerds.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-13 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair there's plenty of people who are casual fans and who don't keep up with what the creator is doing. Half the time a lot of people don't even know who the people making the content they're consuming even really ARE. So they're not in the know. It's not always a sign of purposefully ignoring the gross.

I hold much more ire for people in the industry who knew and who kept quiet because they're the ones who could've done the most.

Is this secret implying that people should do background checks on the people who make stuff and if that doesn't check out then no interact with that stuff at all? Because I think that's an unfair standard and one which is impossible to get a large enough people to do.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-13 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This. So much. I am always in awe of people (specifically in DW fandom because I'm more familiar with it) who are like, "I hate/love this episode because so and so wrote it." or "This season was the best/sucked because so-and-so was the show runner."

Like... I couldn't tell you who directed or wrote a movie, let alone individual TV episodes.

If that shit is happening behind the scenes, the people exposed/witnessing it should be doing something about it. Not Joe Viewer.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-14 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess those people are just very interested in behind the scenes stuff, because I don’t know shit about directors for most things either.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-14 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I couldn't tell you the first thing about the creators of any of the shows I watch because I just... watch the shows. IDGAF about the writers, I'm here to enjoy the stories.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-14 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'd venture that the majority of people don't keep up with what the creators of the media they enjoy are doing. Celeb gossip is a niche interest, and it was even more so a couple decades ago.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-14 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's true of of the majority of people, but the majority of fans? People who are in fandom in any active, engaged way often tend to be aware of and keep up with what the creators are doing to some degree or other.

I think you could honestly say that's one of the crucial dividing marks between being In Fandom and not.

"Widely known" is a bit of a stretch. A lot of the older drama happened before everyone and their grandmother had a twitter and an instagram to post this stuff to. If you were obsessively into the fandom you probably heard rumors, but for every Charisma hinting that there was something not right going on, there was an equal and opposite Alyson hinting that someone was just stirring shit For Reasons.

+1

(Anonymous) 2022-02-14 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
This is a good point.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-14 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
Right? Like, what does "widely known" in the Buffy fandom actually mean? When Buffy was on the air I was a teenager with restricted Internet access and the fandom was mostly on message boards that didn't feel particularly easy to approach for a young fan.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-14 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
There was probably a sub-thread about it on TWOP at some point?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-14 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
fuck alyson hannigan, and you can quote me on that.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-14 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
No, it s not "widely known", most of people's engagement is "I like shows from this creator" and not reading on new drama. So for example for a lot of people being optimistic about RTD is mostly because they liked his episodes.
Also a lot of hate over creator IS just a petty disliking of some plot decisions. So excuse me if I don't really believe some rumors how creator 1 looked at actress 2 he must be a creep

(Anonymous) 2022-02-14 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody is talking about rumors or random cancellations. OP is talking about either confirmed abuse(Whedon) or widely accepted stories(RTD). And actually, the RTD thing is widely known, and the fact that you personally didn’t know doesn’t dispute that. It’s fine to not believe everything you hear. But referring to what OP’s talking about as some rumor, or bringing in the entirely separate topic of mere hate for creators(and you implying as a result that people in these situations who actually care about abuse in the entertainment industry are in the same category as simple “haters”) is not making you look very good. You’re looking extremely defensive, and quite petty yourself.

Yes, creators will always have people that just hate them for reasons like disliking plot decisions. But that has nothing to do with people who don’t like creators because they’re abusive, allegedly or confirmed. It’s really weird and suspect of you to make that connection.

If you hadn’t heard of these controversies, then you shouldn’t get so defensive over this secret, because you didn’t know. But you decided to be antagonistic about it, and spout a bunch of nonsense as a result. If you still like the work of the creators after hearing about their controversies, that’s fine. But outright ignoring it or brushing it off as rumors or lies without any basis is another story.

And your example of a controversy being “creator 1 looked at actress 2 he must be a creep” honestly sounds like conservatives who complain and bullshit like “you can’t even look at women anymore without getting canceled or fired! >:(“. So maybe rethink why you chose such an absurd concept as an example if you don’t want to sound like that.
