It was. I'm just riffing on all the old stuff I used to see on fandom discourses back in the day. It is mad to think that F/F was considered the spiciest of the spicy and just for the outright porno sites because it was considered self evident that it was just spank material for guys.

Guys are looking at visual porn, let's not kid ourselves, lol.

The porny fanfic world (I'm not talking about 12 year olds reading anime fic) is mostly cis women, trans men, and like, four guys.

Four cis guys, I meant to say.

Spoken like someone who’s never posted on Questionable Questing. Or 7chan.org/elit. Or Hentai Foundry, just for good measure.

Spoken like someone who hasn't been in het and FF heavy fandoms for long. Xena/Gabrielle, Buffy/Faith and Ivanova/Talia were big f/f ships back in the day, and at least half the people writing for them were straight men. Not to mention fandoms like Sailor Moon and Ranma 1/2, which also had big contingents of straight guys writing f/f and m/f.

SA Comics fandom had a lot of guys writing porny het and f/f, as well.

I'm going to call at least partial bullshit on this. It may not be fanfic, but I've dabbled in the world on online erotica and read m/m stuff almost certainly written by gay men and m/f stuff almost certainly written by straight men. (And now that I think back, a lot of the straight stuff was sent to me by a guy intent on hooking up with me because it was what he enjoyed.) I'll admit it is a whole different world than fandom, but there are definitely cis men writing/read porn.

Imagine thinking cis men as a group would somehow not be involved or interested in any kind of porn. I am just baffled. It is porn, of course they are interested in it

That's like saying cis women don't watch visual porn. Which I hope they don't believe too...

Fanfic is still its own distinct community and it's true that it's predominantly women. Albeit, my impression is that this is much less true now than it was 5 or 10 years ago.

This is the same impression I get too. There's definitely guys out there of any sexuality writing and reading fic. The porny kind even! Just because there might not be as many as women or you happen not to run into them in conversation often doesn't mean they're not there.

There are, but I don't think the majority of them are writing porny fanfic. They tend to write on erotic sites/porn sites (in my experience).

Yes, this is what I meant. I do know of some gay men who write slash. (A few who are cis, several trans guys.)

Most of the men I encounter involved in fandom don't do fic, though. They do review videos if they're making content.

Yes. And I think, even though fic and review vids/reactions/analysis of movies, etc. are all creative endeavors just like fic, they are very separate worlds.

Heh. My first significant fandom experience was Friendship is Magic. There were a lot of people who wanted to write romance, but didn’t even want to think about pony sex. You ended up with all of these fluffy F/F fics that never got any steamier than, say, a Pegasus draping her wing over her partner. So I wound up completely out of step with the shipping norms in other fandoms.

(We never had ABO, either, presumably because pony wolves were too weird a concept.)

Well I personally would say missing out on ABO was a good thing. The whole arguing over what to warn or tag for where goes back all the way to the paper zines. My first online argument was on a DW mailing list over Benny-Ace slashfic. Which I suppose dates me a bit. And the perennial debate, which pre-dates me by a fair bit, over whether Ranmachan-Akane could be called F/F or not.
