Not to state the obvious but the show is very much consistently aware of these things. I'm not even sure it's correct to say that the show is "militaristic". It depicts militarism but I think it's a reasonable argument to make about how much it endorses it.

Starfleet's the military. That's not a metaphor; it is literally the military. In the future, space is controlled by the military. The only reason DS9 bothers you is they didn't bother to sugarcoat it for you.

Yep. There's lots of things I'd like to like about DS9. But the premise of all the previous Trek shows is "there is always an option other than war". And then DS9 decided to follow up with "except sometimes you just have to do a few warcrimes. As a treat."

I don't think it was more militaristic than the other classic trek shows, but it might have seemed like that because four of its season were taking place during a brutal war in which the main characters were directly involved. How did you find it more militarist than the other shows (especially during the first three seasons)? And I can only think of one instance where Sisko commited a possible (I think the planet was unhabited?) war crime. What are the other instances that waranted saying he constantly commited them? I think know the other one you're probably thinking about, but it's not a war crime and how much Sisko himself is responsible in this case is debatable. There's a big difference between morally grey decisions (under extreme circumstances) and actual war crimes. As an answer to someone else: don't forget The Federation isn't Starfleet and vice-versa. Plenty of people in The Federation aren't Starfleet (aka, not military).

Yeah, I think DS9 does swing into that mode, but also it's far more aware of it than, say, Enterprise, or even the first season of Discovery. I'm not a huge fan of the war parts of the stories, but they're still vastly better than just going pew pew and not looking at the reasons behind it or the results at all (looking at you Star Trek movies).

I get what you mean (not entirely sure I agree), but

I DO feel this way about the A-Team, which begins with a war crime that the writers seem to think is not a war crime, and it's pretty explicitly anti-war while also being pro-violence.

so, i think the cold war and post-cold war US shows implicitly and explicitly about foreign policy were....weird and much more confused about our global presence than you'd expect.

I'm a bit torn because I've never really been a fan of DS9's long war arc, and I find the peacetime seasons and episodes from later seasons that may as well have occurred during peacetime (because the war either plays no role or actively has to be handwaved away) to be my favorite ones. (Part of this preference for the early seasons, though, is that as the war ramps up in DS9, so do the annoying god vs. demons and messiah!Sisko religious bullshit plots that I have very little patience for.)

Also, I don't think Star Trek as a franchise is in any way obligated to tell extended war stories, and so the fact that DS9 does is an intentional choice which may not be a good one. (Of course, Star Trek has always told war stories, largely cold war ones or major skirmishes that happened off-screen from the main shows but are still there in canon (the Federation war with the Klingons, the Borg, etc.).)

I do think the show does enough with its wartime plots to at least partly make up for the militarism -- it wrestles with what actions are permissible and impermissible to take in a war in order to save lives and defend one's ideals; it thinks seriously about the question of what the Federation would do if it had to take on an organized external force that is as militarily strong or stronger than itself and won't accept peaceful coexistence as an option; it deals with the unglamourous parts of war like vets with PTSD learning how to deal with their permanent injuries. But still, it didn't HAVE to have an extended war arc, so I can understand the view that DS9's focus on war and militarism is annoying / uncomfortable / not a good part of Star Trek.

I'm not sure what war crimes of Sisko you're talking about other than the two mentioned above (Sisko's use of poisonous weapons against the Maquis, and the whole "In the Pale Moonlight" episode). I've seen people on the internet arguing that the Federation targeting ketracel white warehouses is a war crime and genocide and I'm honestly confused by that... Ketracel white is a life-necessary substance for the Dominion's genetically-engineered race of SOLDIERS. Blowing up/disrupting enemy war supply lines is not and I'm guessing has never been a war crime even if, yes, it results in the mass death of conscripted soldiers who have no ability to opt out of war. It also is genocide, but mainly because the Dominion has already done the disturbing thing of genetically engineering a whole race of soldiers addicted to a drug that keeps them reliant on the Dominion... But they ARE still soldiers i.e. the one acceptable target in a war... I don't really understand how the Dominion's actions/how they've treated the Jem'hadar in the past somehow turn the most basic of war strategies into "the Federation committing war crimes."

There's also the poisoning of the Founders themselves, which is certainly a war crime. But in that case, Sisko went behind Starfleet's back to authorize/support Bashir in manufacturing a cure.

It was sad about LJ. It suffered a lot of downtimes because it was home to the blogs of Russian pro-democracy campaigners and got repeatedly DDOSed by whatever is the current name of the old NKVD. Everyone that abandoned it and helped turn it into a ghost town was doing Putin's work for him in driving it to irrelevance. Support a Free Ukraine, move FS back to LJ.

Agreed. It doesn't do anyone any favors--as a reader, it makes me uncomfortable because it feels like the only acceptable interaction has to be absolute praise (and usually I have nothing but praise! But there's a difference between free praise and demanded praise), and as a writer, it makes me feel ashamed to show any confidence, even though showing even false/meagre confidence is the first step to having REAL confidence.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-15 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
You say that you and your siblings found it delightfully creepy, but you don't understand how it could have creeped others out. Does it make sense to you, knowing all the different people that exist in the world, that they would have the exact same sensitivity to creepiness? Some people have a lower threshold. And what with the puppets and the intentional darkness, is it really surprising that it went too far for some?

This makes sense as an adult, but as a child (the target audience) I'd never have had any interest in a movie where it's the adults who do something. I just wanted to imagine myself as the hero.
