Why not? Russia is piling up forces, America is building up forces, and the media is stoking hype, and that is a bad recipe. The more soldiers there are in one place, the greater the chance of a fuck up that gets out of hand. Nobody has to set out to start a war for someone to actually start a war.

NAYRT but even if (God forbid) a war starts, it's extremely unlikely that America sends actual soldiers into Ukraine or anything of the sort

Biden has midterms, and he's looking weak ahead of them. He can't afford to look like he is backing down on Russia. Weak president, up coming elections, that is a bad combination.

Boots-on-the-ground would be wildly politically unpopular. Aggressive sanctions and funding and military aid for Ukraine are conceivable.
