I thought we had moved past this argument, say I dunno, 20 years ago? Please don't tell me fandom is genuinely circling back to this one? Even if the talking points are new, 'is it ok to like slash?' is very old.

Slash is fine, you just gotta warn for it.

If nothing else, it’s kinda weird how people expect a warning for M/M, but nobody’s ever asked me to warn for F/F.

Appropriation discourse will never die until and unless the concept of appropriation itself dies.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-15 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Moved past? Fandom has never moved past this argument. Dudebros have always hated slash, and the homophobic het shippers are still with us as well. There's always been a vocal contingent who consider slash to be Bad. The arguments for why may have changed some, but the underlying sentiments of misogyny and homophobia have not.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-15 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
This is very true, and really gets on my tits.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-15 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
There's always the new internet generation with their opinions~

(Anonymous) 2022-02-15 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's fine to like slash.

Even when some (let's stress *some*) slash-writers work really hard to trash or disappear any and all canon female characters in view.

Most nice things have a nasty streak in there somewhere, and most slash-writers are lovely people. And even when they're not, it's only fiction.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-15 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's almost like many slash writers just aren't interested in the awesome ladies! Which they totally should pay a lot of attention to, am I right? It's a moral obligation, after all! /s

I'm sick of people who hate MLM and call it my fetish. Fuck you, it's a better fetish than the kiddie porn you're probably fond of.

Thank you, secret maker!
Perfect image. I love it.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-15 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Quick question, OP. Are you busy labelling people who *don't* care for M/M, or sometimes write stuff that isn't M/M, a 'phobe or an 'ist?

Inquiring minds want to know!

(Anonymous) 2022-02-15 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I think OP is referring to people who accuse people who focus on M/M for shipping purposes or the male characters in general as "misogynists" because they don't emphasize any female characters. It's a repackaging of an old argument to seem less obviously homophobic ("well, you shouldn't imagine the boys kissing because, uh, YOU'RE IGNORING THE GIRLS!")

It's a very old argument but I think people have also added on the additional layer in recent times of "well, you shouldn't imagine the boys kissing because, uh, YOU'RE FETISHIZING GAY MEN!" They just never stop coming up with new reasons for why you shouldn't be so into it.

It's honestly kind of weird because you'll even hear these arguments for relatively progressive people who really have no reason to be this way.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-15 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
That "fetishizing gay men" stance has been around for a while, but...so? Erotic fic is about what gets people off, and some of it is centered around certain acts/people. Sorry, not sorry.

Writing slash and turning male characters into really fey and stereotypical gay tropes (when it's out of character and the canon character is very masc) is annoying to me, though. It's like making, say, Jess in New Girl super butch.

Ah! Someone upthread is throwing the 'phile label around.

I swear - as someone who reads and writes a lot of slash (I genuinely enjoy it, y'know?) - Hardcore Slashers are fucking insufferable.

(I mean, Hardcore Anything is difficult to be around, it's just those clowns seem everywhere these days? *waves*)

Why don't you just tell people you don't care? Why the secret?

That said, I was reading a romance novelist's blog about how he fairly often gets a "you writing about homophobia takes me out of the book" from non-gay people with the implication that they just want the pretty boys to bang and if you're doing that, you're an ass. I'll presume that's not what you're doing, but I do think "I just want pretty boys to bang" gang needs to tell their more idiotic members to chill.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-15 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
what is it about this secret that made literally everyone and their mom come out to read things that weren't written in the actual secret and respond to those things as if they were

really defensive

(Anonymous) 2022-02-15 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I was just about to write a comment saying basically this. Secret was just saying a pretty basic thing. I like the content I like and I'm not going to start making or engaging with content in fandom I don't for the sake of appearing a particular way, it doesn't matter if you call me names. That's something we can all get behind. Or at least I can. It's not that deep and especially lame bringing up super dated discourse (female character bashing to get her out of the way of the M/M ship is so, so old and something fans nowadays don't seem to do, the new trend seems to be also making her gay. But character bashing? The last time I came across earnest character bashing was, like, 2010 KH fic that hated Kairi.)

Where are you seeing this? I don’t see anyone disagreeing with the secret at all, much less twisting the message. Even the person who brought up woman bashing didn’t say they disagreed with the secret.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-15 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.
