Gay romance question sorta based on #7

(Anonymous) 2022-02-15 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any gay romances where the romance is hand in hand with another plot? Mystery, sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, action... Don't care what. I just need my romance to have a plot mixer with it.

The Donald Strachey mysteries are primarily mysteries, but over the course of the books, Don goes from being young and reckless and sleeping around, to having a stronger, faithful relationship with his partner. None of the books are romance focused, but I did like getting to see the romance evolve.

Diana Gabaldon's Lord John Grey series is historical mystery that features a gay male protagonist and romance, though it's not necessarily a traditionally happy ever after type of romance.

The Knight and the Necromancer by A.H. Lee. The summary sounds silly, but I quite liked the execution.

Cat Sebastian's 'Page and Sommers' books are post-WWII murder mysteries. I only read the first in the series, but I liked it a lot - the romance plot was nice and the supporting characters are delightful. (And the mystery worked out, too.)

The Widdershins (Whyborne & Griffin) series by Jordan L Hawk has dark fantasy/Lovecraftian horror/occult mystery plots in every book, escalating in drama level throughout the series.

Paladin's Hope, the latest in a series by T. Kingfisher/Ursula Vernon, is a fantasy romance between a coroner and a paladin trying to figure out who dumped a bunch of corpses in the local river. There's some gore and horror because corpses and magic, but I'm a wuss and enjoyed it anyway.

The previous books in the series focus on het couples, but I'm really hoping a nonbinary side character who keeps showing up gets their own book at some point.

Iirc the Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling had plenty of plot to go along with an at first slow-ish burn romance. Haven't read all the books though (read the first three back in the day and didn't know until recently that there are... 6 now?).

Freya Marske's A Marvellous Light is a mix of historical romance, fantasy, magic and mystery. It's a bit fanficcy (it's up to the reader whether this is a good or bad thing) but still a fun read!

The Perfect Assassin by K.A Doore. The romance is part of the plot. And a fav of my little ace heart, since the main character is an ace mlm.
