From what I gather, the fandom involved is fandom itself i e  that's becoming a universal experience.  It's sad, but so it goes.

And yeah, I think rediscovering Buck Rogers made me swing way back towards "let's not think about it too much and just have fun".

(I mean the episode I watched this weekend was like "Uh oh that dead mummified thing that we found came back to life and ripped up the inside of our shuttle..." I love sci-fi, so very much. I want more scientifically accurate sci-fi with cool ships, awesome adventures, amazing aliens and planets and tech, and no 'humans are the most precious special beings in the whole universe ever!!' kind of shite.

Also, less Manifest Destiny/colonizer energy would be good, too.

I have the opposite problem. I think more things need to take themselves seriously. That doesn't mean the story itself is a serious fest or gritty turned up to 11. It means it plays even silly concepts straight because I'm really tired of the attempt at constantly avoiding being seen as a bit silly or camp or whatever else.

It seems to be the only two options people think there are, are serious, gritty stories that are realistic aside from the advanced technology and total camp fests that lampshade their own silliness when it really doesn't fit.

Where is my "yes this is silly and camp but the character arcs are genuinely moving." Cater to me!
