I mean, there are people who are in fandom but still act like they're "better" than those other "weird" fans. That's the vibe I get from a lot of Sarah Z, and it can be a little annoying which is why I just don't watch her stuff.

Yeah, this. It's classic Geek Hierarchy shit. She behaves as though she's on a higher rung of it than she really is.

Can you give an example, please? I guess most of my fannish activity is following squeeing meta people and fic writers, so I don't know what this attitude looks like because we/they all seem like were all equally nerdy.

AYRT, there are variations. There are def fans who say "I'm better because I care about the lore and not just about shipping" or "I only ship things that have canon evidence, not crack or weird things" or "I don't like whatever corner of fandom because I'm normal". It's annoying for sure, because we ARE all nerds playing in the sandbox, but some peeps get real holier than thou.
