Can you give an example, please? I guess most of my fannish activity is following squeeing meta people and fic writers, so I don't know what this attitude looks like because we/they all seem like were all equally nerdy.

AYRT, there are variations. There are def fans who say "I'm better because I care about the lore and not just about shipping" or "I only ship things that have canon evidence, not crack or weird things" or "I don't like whatever corner of fandom because I'm normal". It's annoying for sure, because we ARE all nerds playing in the sandbox, but some peeps get real holier than thou.
