I feel that just in general fiction of all sorts has forgotten what joy looks like. A little bit of silly camp helps with coping with the world.

I think it's because we're living in pretty dark times.

I looooove this image :D

And yeah, I think rediscovering Buck Rogers made me swing way back towards "let's not think about it too much and just have fun".

(I mean the episode I watched this weekend was like "Uh oh that dead mummified thing that we found came back to life and ripped up the inside of our shuttle..." "huh, weird. anyway, you two take the shuttle back up to the ship and I'll just camp out here alone on the planet's surface for the night!")

Lmao this sounds hilarious.. I'm in for the self aware campbthat rolls with it and has a good time. Gonna check this out!

I always liked the one with the space vampire.

It's kinda funny because this is how Star Wars started - let's just let it rip and make some fun Planet Stories-style space adventures and not worry about backstory or plausibility - and now it feels like it's entombed in canon and brand consistency.

Seriously. A little unrealistic goofiness helps to balance out all the crap that's going on around us.

I love sci-fi, so very much. I want more scientifically accurate sci-fi with cool ships, awesome adventures, amazing aliens and planets and tech, and no 'humans are the most precious special beings in the whole universe ever!!' kind of shite.

Also, less Manifest Destiny/colonizer energy would be good, too.

You can have accuracy or awesomeness, adventure on terra nullis or no explorer energy, you're gonna have to choose. Choose wisely, or not.

The problem is that it is incredibly hard to do "scientifically accurate sci-fi" and "amazing aliens and planets" at the same time, probably actually impossible if you're not willing to handwave some stuff.

In general, I think one of the challenges for sci-fi as a genre is that ppeople writing sci-fi do actually pay attention to what is a plausible future, what are future trends, how does the future feel and look, what are contemporary developments in technology, and so on. And I don't think that it necessarily should pay so much attention to that personally, I'm fine with space opera being a wild exercise of imagination. But empirically people care a lot about science fiction's relation to reality.

And IMO you can see that, for example, with how much science fiction right now is basically "space program science fiction" that's aesthetically very aligned with contemporary trends in space exploration - that's the vibe of space exploration in The Expanse, for example, and it's basically how Cixin Liu's and Andy Weir's stuff seems to work.

How many science fiction TV shows are there even? And how many take themselves seriously? Other than The Expanse.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
You haven't seen any of the modern live action Star Trek Shows, have you. God, they are depressing. TV to slit your wrists by, as my grandmother used to say.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-16 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I just want a sci-fi show to give me back the excitement of watching Farscape. Serious and dark when it needs to be but also batshit space muppets and unapologetic weirdness.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-16 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'd settle for more Pigs in Space at this point.

Nobody in the industry understands that we need camp.

We need a modern Elwood D. Wood Jr.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-16 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I have the opposite problem. I think more things need to take themselves seriously. That doesn't mean the story itself is a serious fest or gritty turned up to 11. It means it plays even silly concepts straight because I'm really tired of the attempt at constantly avoiding being seen as a bit silly or camp or whatever else.

It seems to be the only two options people think there are, are serious, gritty stories that are realistic aside from the advanced technology and total camp fests that lampshade their own silliness when it really doesn't fit.

Where is my "yes this is silly and camp but the character arcs are genuinely moving." Cater to me!

I’ve heard good things about Final Space, if you’re okay with mostly comedy, that seems to still take the arcs seriously.

OMG JUPITER ASCENDING IS one if my favorite movies (I'm not saying it's good, I just really enjoy it. All the tropes, the super flamboyant villain, space dogmen, EVERYTHING).
