This. For all Sarah’s faults, I don’t agree that she is using her status as a bi woman as a shield. At least not all the time, probably. And I definitely don’t think she’s using Emily as a shield. Which is what she was accused of doing on Twitter, and that’s where her new “catchphrase” originated from. People accused her of speaking over trans people with no guidance from actual trans people, either not knowing or ignoring that Emily is writing most of her scripts, and edits all her videos. And Sarah was also accused of being a stereotypical “straight ally” talking over LGBTQ+ people, so she made it clear she is bi. And now that she’s made it clear Emily is her writer to try to dispel the claim that she’s talking out of turn on trans issues, the new narrative from these people on Twitter is either that Sarah is lying about Emily writing these segments and is making her pretend to be the writer so Sarah can project her own thoughts through her, or that Emily is indeed her writer and Sarah is somehow throwing her under the bus by saying she’s her writer and is a trans woman. And sometimes they combine the conspiracy theories.

But Sarah(and Emily) can still be wrong about certain things, and them being LGBTQ+ doesn’t automatically make them right. And they definitely don’t speak for everyone in the LGBTQ+. They certainly don’t speak for me as a lesbian, because I’ve disagreed with and disliked several things in the videos they’ve produced. So AYRT is completely within their right as well to say they don’t speak for them as a non-binary person. I get where they’re coming from on that, despite disagreeing in other areas. This point of view is 100% understandable.

But I don’t think the new catchphrase is a shield or an attempt to absolve them if they get something wrong. I think it’s just an attempt to preempt the bad faith people on social media who do things like try to deny Emily’s agency by saying she’s not actually the writer, or that she doesn’t actually have her thoughts and opinions, it’s all pretend so Sarah can speak through her. It won’t work, unfortunately, because people acting in bad faith on social media will continue to play spin doctor.

Either way, I agree with your comment, and I’m really sorry for the Wall O’ Text!

If someone else is writing SZ's scripts, then why is she even the "personality?"

I'm kind of boggled that videos this amateurish are a two-person operation! So Sarah is...reciting someone else's script? Which isn't even that good in the first place, and Sarah is not especially charismatic?

If Emily is doing the writing, why aren't we getting her work straight from her?

OP

I don’t really have an answer to that, and I have wondered similar things in the past.

I think Sarah used to write her own scripts in the beginning? Like the era where her videos weren’t as essayish I guess, like the video on the Heathers TV series that started her popularity. I don’t know that for sure, but I’ve at least heard that she didn’t always have Emily writing her scripts. And I think Sarah said at one point that Emily doesn’t write everything, like the scripts are a team effort sometimes. Again, I have yet to fact check this, so take all of that with several grains of salt.

And Emily does make her own videos now, and has for a year or two. I can’t speak to the overall quality of her content, because I’ve only seen her video on Doug Walker’s Demo Reel series. I thought that video was pretty good, but I also still think that train wreck of a series and it’s train wreck of a creator is fascinating, so that may have colored my perception and increased my chances of enjoying the video.

*Shrug* I don’t really have anything useful as an answer.

Sarah and Emily write the scripts collaboratively and Sarah performs them. That's the creative arrangement that they have.

If you don't think the end product is good, I mean, just because it's collaborative doesn't mean it can't be bad.
