I'm not going to get into disagreeing with the whole "wah, the Joker is mean and Ivy is so much better for Harley" thing - it's been done before and I don't like getting into wank.

I'll just say that I ship Joker/Harley and Ivy/Harley and I don't think that's contradictory. If push comes to shove I'd take JxHQ every time, but I still like I/H (and several other Harley-festuring pairings; there's a great Harley/Barbara Gordon fic I love to bits).

I just don't like the fact that just about every Harley/Non-Joker fic seems to come with a whole load of Joker-bashing. Fine maybe you need to set up why Harley isn't all over him for five minutes, but couldn't you just say he's in Arkham for a bit or something? It would make a change from "The Joker broke her arm for the fifth time and now >insert character< comforts her and makes her see the light about his evil, evil ways."

BTW "Harley-festuring" is a typo for "Harley-featuring" and not some really weird kink thing. D'oh.

I'm not really into Joker/Harley but I will read it and speculate but WORD on the Joker-bashing. I've noticed that too and most of the time I'm more likely to agree with the anti-Joker/Harley people but the way some of them go about it makes agreeing really difficult. Ultimately, the Joker is still one of my favourite villains so seeing some ill-thought character bashing gets on my nerves. And yes I know he's an unpleasant individual, especially towards Harley at times BUT that doesn't mean bashing him to promote another ship is ok.

Aww, it's nice to hear even some of the non-JxHQ shipping folk agreeing that repeated Joker-bashing gets a bit old! :D

Based on a lot of the non-Joker ship fics you'd think Harley was held together entirely by metal pins from the number of times she's had limbs broken because she got him the wrong kind of cereal or whatever. In BTAS canon she's pushed out of a window once - because she tried to kill Batman. The rest of the time even if he's really pissed off he pretty much he just throws things about or kicks her out - I know kids cartoon and all, they had to keep the tone reasonably light, but for every time he's angry at her there's another moment when they're perfectly happy together or she's sitting on his lap. No one can say it's OOC for the Joker to get mad and if Harley is in the way she's likely to come off worse, but the classic original flavour battered moll syndrome gets overworked IMO.

This is why in BTAS I can accept that it works. In fact, one of my favourite Joker moments (all Joker moments involving all Jokers) involves Harley quite heavily. The way things go down in Return of the Joker wouldn't have had as much of an impact without Harley there to complete the "family".

But I think it's mainly in the comics where my opinion starts to differ. I don't know, I just have a lot of issues with it and that's why I think I tend to prefer Joker on his own there. However, I'm still more than happy to have discussions about DCU Joker/Harley and accept that some people DO like it.

I'll add the slightly wanktastic opinion that Pammy tends to mistreat Harley in her own special way. She's not the Joker's kind of violent crazy, so she doesn't do the violent stuff(going off of DCAU canon), but she's a misanthrope and she verbally abuses Harls all the time.

HQ just likes her controlling folks. :( It's sad.

Word. There are essays/meta saying pretty much exactly that floating around in various places.

For every time you have Ivy sitting in Harl's cell combing her hair while she bawls over the latest Joker-induced upset, you also get Ivy smothering her with a pillow to get her to shut up, calling her stupid and being perfectly happy to leave her to get captured by one of the Bat-clan while Ivy makes a quick getaway. I still like the ship but it's not all cavorting in a bed of rose petals treating each other with Proper Feminist-y Respect.

Yeah, pretty much exactly. I've read some of those essays, too, but I was of the mind just from watching the cartoons.

...dude, they're in ARKHAM. Nobody there is healthy. If HQ is in a relationship, it's gonna be bittersweet and fucked up. And I like Ivy/HQ just fine (more than the Joker, because I want to hit the Joker with a car for creeping me out, but that's not a ship thing.)

Aww, poor Joker! (He'd probably end up clinging to the underneath of the car and would follow you home to get your address, then slowly drive you nuts as revenge - but it's worth a shot.)

I can deal with Pamsy. She's just anti-human. She will kill you in a straightforward fashion at such time as you piss her off. Joker is unpredictable. It hits a phobia.

Two in the chest, one in the head. It's the only way to be sure. (Wait, this is the DC universe. Nevermind 'sure.')

Agreed, there was a whole essay with canon back up of the relationship being damaging to Harley as well on scans_daily, may she rest in peace.

I agree. I love, love, love both pairings very much, but I hate reading Joker-bashing fics so badly. Especially when Ivy is portrayed as the saint. Ivy can hurt Harley just as much as the Joker. http://lovedatjoker.livejournal.com/16474.html
