I feel like I was meant to boycott CB Strike because of JK Rowling. But I was too eager for a new and not-too-bleak mystery series, so I gave it a shot. And it was...okay? I liked that Strike's disability actually affects his mobility. But then it just had to go the romantic route...despite the actors having absolutely zero romantic chemistry, IMO. I used to be resigned to that, as much as I hate it. I guess "Elementary" spoiled me.

I only just watched it and thought it was pretty great. Strike just being an actual decent guy is enough for me, even if they did throw in romance.

Yeah, okay Joanne.

Do you need a Snickers?

AYRT 0/10

Yeah, I liked it and I kind of ship it, actually.

I started watching it before I knew it was a JK Rowling joint, but I like the actors, so. *shrug*

(I have never given a shit about Harry Potter and I know JK is kind of a dick, but I'm sure it doesn't matter what shows I stream or not.)

You’re right, it probably doesn’t matter what shows people stream or not, because I don’t know if that counts as putting money in JK’s pockets like buying the books would.

And not everyone cares if it does put money in her pocket. At least a chunk of it goes to tax or charity, and she's a good person.

Low effort bait 0/10

You can donate to charity and still be a bad person, and being a bigot does make you a bad person. But you already knew that, and you’re just trying to get someone to argue. Get better material.

I agree, actually. JKR has some misguided concerns about the GRA and about exactly how old trans people should be before they're legally permitted to undergo HTR. As far as I'm concerned, if her trans views are the worst thing about her, then she's a far better person than most people. *shrug*

Yikes.

Hard agree. I like both actors and thought they did a good job with the characters. The two mains have good (mostly friendly) chemistry. The mysteries were good.

Then comes an episode with these long lingering looks between them and I actually asked my roommate “was that supposed to be romantic longing?” because I didn’t see it at all. Maybe with a bit more build-up, but not as it was.

I'm not familiar with this, but I gotta say, despite being someone who loves shipping everything in sight I freaking ADORED the platonic friendship on Elementary.

as a disabled person, I am interested in what his disability is and how it works into the stories because I don't trust JK Rowling to be able to write that with any success or nuance but I'm willing to be surprised.

He's a below-knee amputee army veteran. I started reading because I'm also disabled and had heard it was handled pretty well, which it is. So is the other main character's arc, but other things in the books range from nasty to really gross.

ayrt - if you want to see a show do really well with a below-the-knees amputee character, watch the old Highlander: The Series for Joe Dawson. Joe was played by the astounding musician/actor Jim Byrnes who is an actual below-the-knees amputee in real life so it was handled extremely well on the show in the writing and of course, hiring disabled people to play disabled characters is the best method. (In the show, Joe lost his legs in Vietnam, but Byrnes lost his in a car accident IRL). But as a kid growing up with a cane, seeing a cool, hot man on my TV doing cool, action and romance things with a cane, it meant everything.

Now is this series based on the books where the killer is a transphobic boogeyman? Because I don't think I'm up for all that, no matter how well the disability is handled.

NAYRT

Yes, this is the series with the transphobic boogeyman, and a lot of other gross aspects as well. There’s also the female lead being basically an NLOG in the books, and which the show toned down a lot.

Honestly, the books are pretty bad, and boring, formulaic, and unimaginative at their best. So I wouldn’t recommend them at all. The show had no where to go but up compared to the source material, so it’s no wonder it’s so much better.

Joe Dawson was the best.
