On a side note, Nathan Chen's costume is just so low effort I wonder if it was almost intentional how cheap it looks.

+1

If that's his costume, I'm offended. Especially when we had the fabulousness of Loki Jr.in years past, and pretty much most men's skating outfits. dramatic in an indulgent yet austere way. I mean if it's Elton John, i would have thought maybe an outfit similar to his? Smh.

I actually loved that he looked like that. Elaborate costumes look cool but I can't help but like that people coming up can see that you don't have to pay for an elaborate, expensive costume to be champion.

That costume was a Vera Wang, it was expensive as shit.

DA

It certainly didn’t look it. I actually like the way it looks though, even though it doesn’t look anything like the classy couture of a Vera Wang piece. It’s aesthetically pleasing to me in it’s simplicity.

But while you are completely correct that this costume was very expensive whether it looked like a conventional Vera or not, I agree with AYRT that it would be cool for aspiring Olympic skaters to not feel pressured into thinking they have to have fancy and expensive costumes just to stand out. Because imo it should be all about the skating, not costume one-upmanship. And it is all about the skating officially, I’m not pretending that points will ever get docked in the actual competition for not having a nice enough costume. But I mean that it would be nice if aspiring skaters didn’t feel like brilliant and expensive costumes were a tradition they were forced to follow, or risk being ridiculed on social media for not having a “good enough” one.

I think I don't like it because the Vera Wang association makes it feel more pointedly about whether he looks masculine than whether he has to wear sequins.

Honestly, while it would be great, this costume does not advance that in any way. The kids who have olympic hopes know 100% this was vera wang and they wouldn't be able to get away with it

Oh, for sure, I don’t think this costume advances that at all either, and I phrased my comment wrong to imply it did. I agree with AYRT that it would be nice for costuming to be less elite as a concept in the future, but this costume doesn’t do the job, and being a Vera Wang piece is only one of the reasons. I still lowkey love the costume anyways, but I have odd taste.

That’s completely fair!

I'm no expert on figure skating costumes but I've always loved the simpler costumes best. There's something kind of badass about them, while the fancier costumes look like the skater is trying to compensate for something (not that there's any inverse correlation between costume and talent that I know of).

It looks like a 'fancy dress party' Red Shirt uniform from Star Trek. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, heh. But it's not super-awesome, either.

He's worn several different costumes for Rocketman over the years, so take your pick (I don't believe the blue costume is a Rocketman one, but can confirm all the others):
