And even when I say "popularized" I kinda say that lightly, because it was used in the 19th century (1840s) by various writers (a number of which were in the American south and I'm also pretty sure I've read it or heard the phrase in a song or on tv/movies/ works that predate GoT. Especially since not GoT was not exactly a cultural zeitgeist in 1996.
