I think Frank Oz was commenting that the newest versions of the Muppets are 'too cute' - especially since they're currently owned by Disney who really have no idea how to portray the Muppets because they consider it a 'kids show' rather than the original intent was for a much older audience. So I think that might be one of the reasons for Kermit's character change.
