Writing Thread

Hi, it's the weekend and I'm here early so... Any writing discussions, rants, etc. are welcomed in this thread!

I'm so damn tired at the moment, I'm not getting anything written. Anyone else get like creatively frustrated when they can't write? It's gnawing at me.

I don't get how I can write a whole thing in my head -- not just imagine a thing or gather ideas for a thing or picture a thing, but WRITE a thing, with *words* and coherent sentences and the exact kind of flow I want my actual written works to have...but can't replicate that writing *outside* of my head. It's killing me. There are words and sentences and paragraphs there. Why can't I write them down? Why do they go away as soon as I think about writing them down? I would have such good work done...

Whoohoo, after a whole year of Not Writing because my life was hell, I'm catching up with old prompts and churning out drabbles again! Go me!

Has the Kudos Bot gotten to your fic(s) on AO3? Any feelings or thoughts about the Kudos Bot?

A Kudos Bot gives artificial likes to fics on AO3. It's most obvious when the Kudos count is higher than the Hits count. Also, if the Kudos/Hits ratio is suspiciously high, you've likely gotten Kudos Botted. AFAIK AO3 doesn't know what is causing this to happen and there's no way to strip away the artificial Kudos.

Yeah.

I did a bunch of rare-pair podfics and they were (regrettably but understandably) not getting kudos, and suddenly they jumped up to 33 (all Guests).

Feels kinda humiliating, to be honest. "There there, the robot likes you..."

Another problem FF.net doesn't have. If you get a comment there, then it is genuine.

I had a kudos, comment and bookmark all at 0 views, from a named account. Confused the hell out of me.

I just want to have a plot bunny that I can keep alive again. I feel like I have lost all creativity and inspiration, and it is partially that I'm not in any active fandoms, and partly because I just am not feeling it with any current shows, but mainly because I just feel bleh.

Just tired of not being able to progress on stuff, being dissatisfied with whatever I do crank out. I hate having all these awesome ideas and then just having complete shit ability to make them come to life, and present to an audience the way it seemed in my head (or close enough anyway). I envy people who can bang out 500k-1M fics within the space of a year and have their work not suck.

I know it's not like I haven't written ANYTHING in months. I wrote a couple short things (including one that is NOT in Vagrant Story fandom, hahah). But I feel like I've written nothing because of five WIPs (three long multichaptered things) that haven't moved. Sigh.

I had that period of seven years where I couldn't write anything due to my health, brain fog and inability to concentrate through the pain, until I realized I could still write the one fandom and characters I was most familiar with... I worry that with my health continuing to decline, I'm losing my ability to write in that fandom too...

What do you look for in a M/M urban fantasy? I’m currently writing one, and I know what I like. But what I like might not be what most readers want.

I’m thinking: tropes, character arcs, level of stakes, etc.

I was writing everyday, hitting 500+ words on average, but a friend gifted me Stardew Valley for my birthday so... I haven't been writing for a week or so heh. I don't feel guilty, but I do hope I'll get back into the same writing swing once I finish bingeing this game.

I set out to write a fluffy fic full of soft cuddling, but my brain keeps wanting to turn it into a smut-fest and I'm just like, "Why, brain? Why?".

Bucket List

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
The term bucket list used as it is today did not exist before the 2007 movie The Bucket List starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. Ain't that some shit?

Ah, a fellow reddit reader.

Yeah, I remember not liking the term bucket list when I first heard it, because it felt 'too new.' I think I'm okay with the concept of it, but the name will always feel very twee. Glad to know it came from a movie.

Well now.
Reminds me of how so many people (me included) thought "sweet summer child" was one of those condescending Southern US things (you know, like "bless your heart" and such) only to find out it's a Game of Thrones thing.

I think the reason this seems insane to everyone is that, when the movie came out, no one was really like "what the hell is a bucket list". Everyone just immediately accepted and adopted it.

My bad. You appear to be correct. What the ever loving fuck.

I do remember that. It makes sense, because I had never heard the phrase before that movie came out. It was a pretty cute movie too, so it’s a shame it doesn’t get talked about more these days.
