I think it's way premature to judge this adaptation by just a few second from a trailer.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
God, this is gonna be one of those shows that garners a truly insufferable hate-bandwagon isn't it?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Garners? It is already there.

spoilers

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It already has. Some people are Big Mad, and a not insignificant portion of those people are mad because they dared make some of the characters not white.

Yup ^^^

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
And on the other side they will have rabid stans who will think it's a flawless piece of media and who will call everyone who offers even mild criticism a misogynistic racist just on principle. It's Star Wars TLJ all over again, not sure why anyone expected otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
i mean, that's just the state of fandom now, tbh. i can't think of the last one where it wasn't that divisive and shitty.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm already unfollowing and blocking blogs. Sigh.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
What, specifically, was so horrible? Because most of the screeching I've heard about this was about multi-racial casting (and the rest was "that guy does not look like Hugo Weaving's Elrond).

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding this question about what was so horrible about it. I’m not the target audience and thought it was pretty “meh”.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of the criticism I've seen (in actual fandom circles) was the lack of bearded female dwarves, the way the costumes look kinda cheap so far, the short hair on the elves, the fact that they keep mentioning how their great inspiration is Game of Thrones, the way they completely changed Elrond's character, Galadriel wearing a Feanorian Star on her armour, and Elrond's casting in general.

Are there also a lot of racist comments? Yes. But pretending that all the criticism is just racist screeching is such major bullshit.

Personally, I'm kinda leery about the very American faux-diversity which means black and white only, god forbid anyone ask for more diversity than the tokenism they put in the trailers solely because they KNEW it would generate outrage which they can now conveniently use to dismiss all criticism as "you're just all racist if you don't like it". Because let's face it, this is Amazon. They're not in it for the social justice and activism.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
> Galadriel wearing a Feanorian Star on her armour

Can you elaborate on this and why it's a good/bad thing? It's been a hot minute since I've read the books.

All of this.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"which means black and white only"

eh that makes sense to me because why wouldn't there be elves/hobbits/humans with darker skin? this is a fantasy world, they aren't going to have races the same way we do in our modern world but there's no reason there can't be darker-skinned elves or hobbits or what have you.

Anon above went into a more detailed list, but I'm going to zero in specifically on the Elrond and Galadriel complaints.

The thing about the part of the story they're adapting for this show is that it's REALLY richly detailed. Excruciatingly detailed. The Silmarillion is lore for the nerds who don't think LotR lore is deep enough (and I say that with the utmost awe and affection). We get so much depth about characters like Galadriel and Elrond here--their younger years, their successes and failures and driving motivations, everything that leads them to the characters they are in LotR.

And because we have all that detailed lore, to be presented with something that's not only inaccurate but directly opposed to their canon characteristics and histories is kind of a slap in the face, and even more so because the people who know about and adore these exact histories have been the most dedicated and loving of fans for decades (which I don't mean as a "only true fans" way--I mean if you've read the Silmarillion, as I have not, you're just REALLY dedicated).

Also, in addition to everything mentioned, I don't really understand how they're going to make this work thematically. They've cast characters in a way that suggests that they're compressing A LOT of this timeline (they've cast an adult for Isildur, and when I say that makes zero sense), and tbqf that ruins the themes involved. Maybe this is a two timelines thing, but while the elves and men are Very Stupid, they seem considerably less stupid when you get the idea that time has passed and they don't either know about Sauron or alternatively don't remember how shit he is. But if you make that only a couple seasons.....i don't know.

I kind of get that.

I mean, I watched the trailer, but wow, it did not make me want to watch it. It didn't look at all real to me. It looked like a video game. Maybe that's what they're going for, but that's not really something I go for in a live-action show. But beyond that, it also kind of seemed like generic fantasy rather than particularly Middle Earth, except maybe the graphic of the ring.

[Slamming hands on table] WHERE ARE THE FEMALE DWARVES BEARDS AMAZON WHERE ARE THEY WHERE ARE THE LADIES' FUCKIN BEEEAAAAAARDS

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Genuinely seriously disappointed in this. Cheery in the Night Watch adaptation was not what I'd hoped, but I tried to make my peace with the non-binary/agender representation. This just feels like dropping beards for no reason other than "oh, noes, our dwarf women won't be pretty enough!!!"

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I'm not even a big Tolkien fan and I'm mad about this. Partly because I'm a short cis woman with a permanent glower/bitchface and I have stubble, not peachfuzz, and would have a full on beard if I didn't shave or wax.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
And they HAD female dwarves with beards in the flashback scenes in the Hobbit! They looked great! There is SO much great concept art involving dwarves! It's not like it's HARD.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Such a missed opportunity. The Hobbit already got shit for not featuring bearded lady dwarves, you'd think the "inclusive" adaptation would lean hard into that.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY 😭

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Usually I would advocate keeping an open mind about unreleased media but the way they've done this adaptation has me predisposed toward disliking it already. Namely, they've decided to focus on the part of the Second Age I care the least about. I didn't want more Sauron and the struggle for the rings of power, I wanted the Rise and Fall of Numenor. In GoT terms, that would be less the main show and more that Targaryen prequel that's apparently still coming out, except now no one gives a shit about that because it's fucking GoT.
