Hollywood started going to shit with its second film ever made. People have been saying the same damn thing about lack of artistic vision and originality since the industry began. It has always been dominated by trends and rip offs, with the occasional stroke of divisive genius and commercially unsuccessful critical darlings just to spice things up.

Bob Hope and Bing Crosby made the same damn movie six times over a twelve year span, then ten years after that they did it again. And then Bob riffed on that series at least twice in his other movies. And then Kenneth Brannagh and Kevin Kline did an animated sequel forty years after that. Tell me that Hollywood rehashing ideas is new.

I’ve seen it argued that Hollywood has a regular cycle of shit and not shit, linked to how much of a stranglehold the largest producers have over the industry.

We just flushed one of the bigger pieces of shit from the industry, and the Oscars have gotten more competitive and diverse since Harvey went bye-bye. So there is that.

There have also been many real changes over the years in the structure of Hollywood and the kinds of movies that get made. Hollywood was a very different system in the 1940s compared to the 1970s, different again in the 1980s and 1990s, and it's different today compared to the 80s and 90s.

It's true that people have a kneejerk tendency to think that things get worse over time. But Hollywood does change over time. And in my personal opinion, the current structure of Hollywood does result in worse films compared to what Hollywood used to make, or at least films that are less to my personal taste. It's a fact that Hollywood is making more reboots, sequels, IP adaptations, and remakes, and less original content now compared to 20 or 30 years ago. There are fewer midbudget movies now then there used to be. People aren't just making those things up - they are actually happening. And for me personally, those changes mean that there are fewer good entertaining movies that I enjoy.
