My mental image was younger and uglier than Rickman, yes. Snape's generation should only be in their early 30s really. And it's ok to let him be scraggly-looking. Sexiness isn't just about looks, there's a lot more to it than that. There are a lot of objectively ugly people who are really hot, and I always saw him as one of those.
