I think at least some of the detectives after Richard were less uptight. Like, Ardal O'Hanlon's character might have gone out for more beer.

I agree the trope is terrible.

LOL, I think all the detectives after Richard were less uptight. Until maybe the latest guy, who I haven't seen. Frankly, I liked that they went in a more open-minded, less neurotic direction after Richard and wish they would've stayed on that path.

It definitely helps for them to mix it up in terms of character types. One of the reasons I stopped watching is because the newest guy felt like a less interesting re-hash of some of Richard’s issues.
